Knicks Win NBA Championship
This may have been the best five-game Finals series we’ve ever seen. The Knicks beat the Spurs 94-90 in game five to win the series 4-1.
In the 30 years for which we have play-by-play data, the 2026 Finals was:
The only Finals series where every game was within five points in the last five minutes.
Just the fourth playoff series where Games 1-5 were all within three points in the last two minutes.
The first series in the last 10 years where Games 1-5 were all within three points in the last two minutes.
Five incredible games, even though the San Antonio Spurs won the first five quarters by a total of 57 points and led by as many as 29 in Game 4. The New York Knicks just kept coming back, erasing double-digit deficits in all five games and winning four of the five to earn the franchise’s first championship in 53 years.
The Knicks finished these playoffs 6-2 in games they trailed by double digits, the best such playoff record for any team in these 30 years of play-by-play data. (Teams’ overall record in playoff games they trailed by double digits over that time is 530-2,007, .209.)
Jalen Brunson led the Finals with 22 points scored in the clutch (with the score within five in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter), the most clutch points for any player in the Finals in the last 15 years (since Dirk Nowitzki scored 26 in the 2011 Finals). He wasn’t particularly efficient, but he had a clutch usage rate of 53.3%.
Brunson has now led the playoffs in clutch usage rate (minimum 25 clutch minutes played) in each of the last three years. He was the Knicks’ offense down the stretch of all those close games, often taking on 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama on critical possessions in The Finals. Brunson was the MVP.
'Father of three seized by ICE at FIFA match last summer warns immigrant fans of danger'
It was supposed to be a joyful day with their father but in a matter of seconds that summer afternoon turned into a nightmare, which resulted in their family being wrenched apart.
That afternoon in July 2025, Manuel* drove to the stadium in East Rutherford, in New Jersey, with two of his sons, ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup Final between PSG and Chelsea. He wanted to capture that moment forever, so after pulling up in the parking lot, he got out his recreational drone to take a photo.
The president’s security detail
He could not get the drone up. “The truth is that when I tried to fly it, there was a red dot - the airspace was jammed - so my drone didn’t work,” Manuel had no idea it was a no-fly zone. In a matter of seconds, police surrounded him.
US President Donald Trump was in attendance and security was tight.
Manuel was taken away to an office inside the stadium, “They told me they were from the president’s secret service detail.”
He had no time to say goodbye to his sons.
“They wouldn’t let me get close to him, they pushed me like this,” his son Santiago* remembered, shoving out his arms to illustrate the gesture, trying hard not to let tears break through as he relived the trauma of that day that he has carried with him now for almost a year, “It made us feel sad and bad.”

Far-right and anti-racist protesters clash in UK cities after Belfast riots
Far-right marches took place across the UK on Saturday after violent unrest in Belfast and Southampton in recent days.
Several people were arrested on Saturday afternoon as far-right groups clashed with anti-racist and anti-fascist demonstrators in Brighton, Liverpool, Sheffield and Glasgow.
Homes and vehicles were set on fire in Belfast this week after Stephen Ogilvie, 44, lost an eye after a knife attack in the city on Monday evening. Hadi Alodid, 30, originally from Sudan, has been charged with attempted murder.
This week, five people were also jailed for violent disorder after riots broke out in Southampton in response to the death of Henry Nowak.

Los Angeles has one of the deadest downtowns in the world, according to a new survey.
Out of 75 of the top cities around the world, L.A. ranked among the lowest for vibrancy in Gensler’s 2026 City Pulse report released this week.
Around 65% of those surveyed found DTLA vibrant compared to more than 80% vibrancy scores for New York, Chicago, Sydney and Shanghai.
The urban planning and consulting company surveyed 35,000 city residents on how they ranked their city for a variety of statements. Los Angeles ranked 20th-lowest globally and 11th-lowest among 34 U.S. cities in vibrancy.

Trump says US-Iran deal to be signed Sunday, contradicting Tehran, which doesn’t react
US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that the framework for a peace deal that would end the months-long conflict was scheduled to be signed on Sunday and that the key Strait of Hormuz waterway would be immediately “open to all” after it is signed, although Iran has denied the signing will take place so soon.
The announcement has left Israel deeply concerned, with officials warning that the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding endanger Israel’s security interests and fail to address any of the key issues. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who played no direct role in the negotiations, will reportedly convene his security cabinet on Sunday evening to discuss the agreement.
Pakistani and Qatari mediators are set to join US and Iranian officials for a virtual meeting to sign the MOU, the Axios news site reported on Saturday evening, which will extend the ceasefire by 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and trigger negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
