100 days into the war on Iran, Trump fails to rally US support

Sunday marks 100 days into the war that the United States and Israel launched against Iran.

But as fighting and ceasefire negotiations continue to grind on, the conflict remains overwhelmingly unpopular among the US public, making it a political liability for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.

Even before the war started, public opinion polls showed that most Americans opposed bombing Iran. When the fighting began, the numbers did not improve, with many US voters perceiving the war as unnecessary and detrimental to the country.

“What’s really clear is that few Americans think that this war with Iran serves American interests,” said Shibley Telhami, a professor of peace and development at the University of Maryland, who has conducted polling on the war.

The lack of public backing for the war is consequential, experts say, because it could weaken Trump politically at home.

Russia: Ukraine’s drones hit St Petersburg military targets in second wave of attacks

The Telegraph reports:

Ukraine fired hundreds of drones at St Petersburg in the second attack on the city and its surrounding region in a week.

Kyiv hit energy and military sites early on Saturday, including Russian naval arsenals and a naval base in the town of Kronstadt, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, said.

One person died and an oil depot was set ablaze, as residents in the country’s second-biggest city were told to shelter indoors, and Russia briefly closed maritime access to Kronstadt.

Meanwhile, reports have come in of wider large-scale oil infrastructure attacks elsewhere.

Photos and videos that residents have posted on social media appear to show the devastation that drone attacks inflicted on an oil depot in the city of Ust-Labinsk in Krasnodar Krai, southern Russia.

U.K.: David Sullivan steps down at West Ham to fight claims about private life

The Guardian reports:

The former pornography baron David Sullivan has announced his resignation as a joint-chair and director of West Ham with immediate effect.

Sullivan and his legal representatives said in a statement that the 77-year-old billionaire was stepping down to apply his “full energy and attention” to fighting what he described as “false allegations” concerning his personal conduct, due to be aired as part of a joint investigation by BBC Panorama and the Times on Monday.

Sullivan, who made his fortune in the adult entertainment industry before founding the Sport newspapers, said on Saturday he was announcing his intention to stand down “for the benefit of transparency”.

He did not elaborate on the accusations but said he “categorically” denied them. He described the allegations as “factually incorrect and entirely false” and said he intended to sue any outlet that broadcast or published them.

“After a lifetime spent building businesses in the adult industry, in which I have met thousands of women, it is sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me,” he said.

U.S.: Pentagon Sees Growing Espionage Threat From Israel

The New York Times reports:

Recent U.S. intelligence reports have raised concerns about Israeli spy agencies eavesdropping on American negotiators working on a peace deal with Iran, amid rising concern over a more general counterintelligence threat by Israel.

Israel and the United States have long known, and tolerated, that each was spying on the other. But an intensified Israeli effort to learn about U.S. positions in talks with Iran has crossed a line, according to some American officials.

The reports include concerns that Israel has stepped up its efforts to eavesdrop on senior American officials, including Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s top negotiator, Elbridge A. Colby, the Pentagon’s top policy official, and one of his main deputies, Michael P. DiMino IV.

Another report, written by the Defense Intelligence Agency and other military intelligence offices and focused on earlier events going back several years, said that the counterintelligence threat level posed by Israel had been increased in recent weeks to the top level, from high to critical. The report, to which the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency contributed, outlines various efforts by Israel to spy on American military personnel and government officials.

Foreign Businesses Are Fleeing Cuba as Its Economy Collapses

WSJ reports:

International businesses are abandoning Cuba, delivering another blow to the island’s collapsing economy as the Trump administration ratchets up pressure on Havana.

Mastercard and Visa transactions by non-U.S. foreign visitors will be suspended on the island starting Saturday, according to Cuba’s central bank. Americans were already prohibited from using their cards in Cuba. 

Spanish hotel giants Iberostar and Meliá have said they are giving up management of at least a dozen Cuban hotels each. Royalton Hotels & Resorts, a Canadian operator, ceased operations after grappling with a collapse in tourism.

There is also uncertainty over the future of Sherritt International, a Canadian mining company that’s one of Cuba’s most important foreign investors. Its former chief executive was once nicknamed Fidel Castro’s “favorite capitalist.” Last month, Sherritt said it was suspending operations and repatriating staff.

The exodus followed several major airlines’ canceling flights into Cuba because of jet-fuel shortages there.
