Middle East: Tenuous

Bloomberg reports:

Prospects for the survival of a US-Iran ceasefire arguably remain dim as President Donald Trump expressed both optimism and new threats. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to bend slightly, deciding to open direct talks with Lebanon, whose territory Israel invaded as part of the war.

But Netanyahu hasn’t changed his position that Israel’s Lebanese bombing campaign, which he says is directed at Iran-aligned Hezbollah, isn’t part of the US-Iran deal. Iranian officials have said the attacks, which have killed more than 1,700 people since the war began, must stop if the Strait of Hormuz is to be fully reopened to traffic.

Developments on Thursday sowed new doubts about the possibility of securing a long-term deal to end a war that’s engulfed the Middle East, done long-term damage to energy infrastructure and upended the global economy.

Israel: No Cease-fire

The Guardian reports:

“I wish to inform you: There is no ceasefire in Lebanon,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Israelis in a short video address posted on X. He said Israel was “continuing to strike Hezbollah with full force, and we will not stop until we restore your security.”

His comments come shortly after President Trump said he had asked Netanyahu to be “more low-key” in Lebanon, as the US seeks to negotiate with Iran to bring the war to an end.

Netanyahu added that he had instructed his government to “open direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible.” The talks will focus on the disarmament of Hezbollah and the establishment of peaceful relations between Israel and Lebanon, he added.
 

Middle East: Death Tolls Climbs

As of early April 2026, the ongoing conflict involving Iran has resulted in over 3,000 to 5,300+ deaths, according to reports from HRANA and international agencies. The casualties include over 1,700 civilians, with hundreds of children killed, while regional tensions have displaced over 3 million people in Iran and 1 million in Lebanon.

United Kingdom: Prime Minister Fed Up With Trump

The Telegraph reports:

Sir Keir Starmer has said he is “fed up” with Donald Trump and appeared to compare him to Vladimir Putin. 

During a trip to the Gulf, the Prime Minister said he is unhappy with the impact of the Iran war on the domestic cost of living. 

Sir Keir told ITV’s Robert Peston: “I’m fed up with the fact that families across the country see their bills go up and down on energy, businesses’ bills go up and down on energy because of the actions of Putin or Trump across the world.” 

He also split with the US president over Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, saying the strikes “shouldn’t be happening.”
