Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye: Project Voice at Columbus Theater

The Columbus Cooperative proudly presents an evening of spoken word and poetry with Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye: Project VOICE.

Sarah Kay is a New Yorker. a poetry writer and reader. an educator. the founder and co-director of Project VOICE.

Phil Kaye is a Japanese-American poet. His work has been featured in settings ranging from The New Yorker to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and viewed millions of times online. 

The event begins at 7 p.m.

 RI Festival of Children's Books and Authors at Lincoln School

This year’s festival features well-known authors and illustrators including Vanessa Brandley-Newton, James Dean, Angie and Tony DiTerlizzi, Lynda Mullally Hunt, Torrey Maldonado, Megan McDonald, Oge Mora, Dan Santat, John Rocco, Matt Tavares, and Jumanji author Chris Van Allsburg (pictured).

Children and their families will have the opportunity to meet and talk to the authors, have their books signed, participate in bookmaking and other crafts.

Carol Burnett at Providence Performing Arts Center

During “An Evening of Laughter and Reflection,” Carol will take questions from the audience, show video clips from her shows in a format that harkens back to the legendary openings of The Carol Burnett Show where her studio audience had an unfiltered opportunity to engage Carol with questions and receive spontaneous answers. “I love the spontaneity of these evenings,” said Carol. “I never know what anyone is going to ask, or say, or do, so it keeps me on my toes!”

Glocester Scarecrow Festival at Pavilion at Kent Field and the Main Street of Chepachet

Saturday is Scarecrow Festival Day with scarecrow placement at 9 a.m. and awards given out at 1 p.m.

Music, food, pumpkin painting, farmer's market, face painting, and other events will take place in Chepachet Village all day.

Come check out the scarecrows both day and at night with the glow of the lamppost lights on them.

Halloween Iron Pour at The Steel Yard

The Steel Yard will be transforming the entire Yard into a theatrical display of fire and art this October.

Larger-than-life sculptures will be activated by fire and the molten metal. People return annually not only for the sparky performance and the numerous steel and iron props that we build in our own studio but also for the phenomenal local music and food.'

Revolutionary War Re-Enactment at Chase Farm Park 

Spectators will get to experience a narrated, full-scale battle each day between the Continental Army soldiers and the British Army,

Loyalists, Native Americans, and Followers of the Army. 

The music of fife and drum corps will be interspersed with the shouts of the troops and sounds of musket fire. 

A large encampment of both soldiers and civilians will offer living history presentations to the public, including drills, artillery demonstrations, medical scenarios, laundry, cooking, clothing repairs and more.

Flickers' Vortex Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror Film Festival at Various Locations

A phantasmagoric symphony of international films blasts its way across the big screen as the Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) launches its 19th Annual Flickers' Vortex Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Film Festival. In addition to its traditional spooky film fare, “Vortex” will showcase a wide array of sci-fi and fantasy cinema.

This year's festival includes a return of its popular H.P. Lovecraft Walking Tour presented in collaboration with the RI Historical Society, free after-school KidsEye programs, the Campus Connections program, which brings programming to area colleges and universities, and two free forums that look behind the scenes at creating genre films in the Ocean State.
