Man Attacked by Axe-Wielding Man at Church in Providence

A man was attacked by a suspect wielding an axe at a church in Providence on Monday afternoon, according to police.

The suspect was later found hiding in the parking lot at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.


About Incident
Officers responded to St. Patrick's Church on Smith Street shortly before 5 PM on Monday for a report of an assault.

Police said they met with the victim - a male in his 40s - who provided a description of the assailant and said that he fled on foot following the attack.

The victim told police he and the suspect got into an argument that started inside the church, before they went outside - and the suspect retrieved an axe from his bag and struck him in the head multiple times.

Police say the victim was transported by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital.


Suspect Found in Vets Parking Lot
Officers said based on the suspect description, they located Jehvine Quawey, age 28, in the parking lot of 5 Avenue of the Arts, where Veterans Memorial Auditorium is located.

Police say Quawey, who was found hiding between vehicles, was found to have a bloody axe in his bag.

Quawey, who was arrested without incident, is now facing felony assault charges.
