Canada: 10 dead, Including Female Suspect, in ‘Devastating’ Shootings

Toronto Star reports:

RCMP Supt. Ken Floyd says police are “not in a place” to understand what motivated a shooter suspected of killing two people at a home in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., before going to a school and committing one of Canada’s worst mass shootings.

A total of 10 people are dead after Tuesday’s shootings in the tiny community in B.C.‘s Peace region, including the lone suspect who police say died at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School by suicide. 

Floyd said about 25 people were hurt at the school, including two with life-threatening injuries.

U.S. - China: Tesla No Longer # 1

Los Angeles Times reports:

Tesla, the 23-year-old company that brought green cars into the mainstream, has been pushed off its perch as the world’s top electric vehicle seller.

Chinese EV manufacturer BYD sold hundreds of thousands more cars last year, and it’s not just in China.

In most of the countries where the Chinese titan went head-to-head with Tesla — including Germany, Mexico, Thailand and Australia — Tesla lost market share at an unprecedented rate.

U.S.: Growing Delinquency of Debt

Bloomberg reports:

Delinquency rates on loans ranging from mortgages to credit cards rose to 4.8% of all outstanding US household debt in the fourth quarter, the highest level since 2017, driven by rising defaults among low-income and young borrowers.

While the overall share of loans in some stage of default is near pre-pandemic averages, the rise in delinquencies among the lowest earners adds to evidence of an increasingly bifurcated economy, data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit released Tuesday showed.

Israel - Hamas: IDF Readying New Gaza Offensive to Disarm Hamas

Times of Israel reports:

Four months into a ceasefire with Hamas, the Israeli military is drawing up plans for a renewed offensive in the Gaza Strip to disarm the terror group by force, The Times of Israel has learned.

The US-brokered ceasefire plan reached in October foresees the demilitarization of Gaza, including the disarmament of Hamas, along with a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Strip. However, implementation of the plan has remained unclear, with Israeli officials increasingly believing that stripping Hamas of its weapons will be impossible without the Israel Defense Forces taking action.

Should hostilities renew, fighting is liable to be more intense and more widespread than previous rounds, as Israeli forces will no longer constrained by the presence of hostages on Gazan soil. 

Norway: Former Ministers Under Investigation

Oslo press reports:

Two former Norwegian foreign ministers, one of whom also was briefly prime minister and held other lofty posts in Norway, are now under formal investigations. The probes follow revelations about their relationships with the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that were much deeper than either had initially revealed.

Thorbjørn Jagland [and] Børge Brende are shown here together in 2014, not long after Brende had become foreign minister in a new Conservative-led government. Jagland was then both secretary general of the Council of Europe and leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Brende hadn’t yet met Jeffrey Epstein but Jagland was already spending time with Epstein and even vacationing at Epstein’s estate in Palm Beach, Florida, according to email correspondence between them that’s just been revealed. 

Thorbjørn Jagland is suspected of serious corruption, after Norway’s economic crime unit Økokrim announced it was launching an investigation into Jagland’s dealings with the billionaire Epstein. Jagland had claimed last autumn that he only had normal diplomatic contact with Epstein, who committed suicide in prison in 2019 after being arrested for the second time on charges of sex offenses.
