RI-NAACP Youth Council

The youth council of the local NAACP chapter, under the stalwart leadership of the energetic Pilar McCloud, took part in a 127 mile long march over 5 days this past week! Their portion of the march went from Richmond, Virginia to Washington, DC. They marched to mobilize activists to fight for a national agenda that creates a fair criminal justice system, enhances voting rights, creates jobs with fair wages, and fosters an equitable public education system. The march took place under sweltering heat (88-92 degrees at some points) and monsoon like rain, but the youngsters returned stronger and even more resolute in pursuit of justice than they were before they started.

Barack Obama

The President of the United States had a good week in the news. Obama admonished liberal college students for their desire to be coddled and shielded from ideas and arguments they don't agree with. Then Obama invited Ahmed Mohamed, the 14-year-old Texas high school student who was arrested for bringing a homemade clock to school, to the White House. Obama was wise to take a stand against racial profiling.

Bryant University

The United States Department of Education released its college scorecard. And it was Bryant University that has the best return on investment according to the study. The formula takes into account college costs, graduation, debt and post-college earnings. Those things, plus more, considered, Bryant gives students the best return on their tuition and time investment.

Bishop Thomas Tobin

The state's Catholic Bishop and leader of the Providence Diocese has seen his profile rise on a national stage as a critic of Pope Francis. Quoted in a Washington Post article, Tobin suggested that the pontiff is too eager to accommodate the secular attitudes of the day at the expense of what Catholics believe are universal truths. One doesn't have to agree with Tobin to respect his courage in standing firm alongside his beliefs and conscience.

Michael Silverstein

The judge in the 38 studios civil case lands himself on the "hot" list for the second week in a row. Silverstein rejected a motion to have portions of the Wells Fargo sealed documents redacted earlier this week. Silverstein, thanks to agreeing to unseal the redacted documents and depositions in the 38 studios case, is beginning to seem like one of Rhode Island's biggest open government advocates.

Will Blackmon

The Rhode Island native has once again earned himself a spot on an NFL team. The defensive back and special teams kick returner was signed by the Washington Redskins earlier this week. Here's hoping the former Bishop Hendricken standout has plenty of success with his new team.

Gina Raimondo

GoLocal reported this week that Raimondo forced out Xinsheng Sean Ling, the original founder of Nabsys, from the company, when he raised concerns that a crucial piece of technology was lacking in the genome mapping startup company back in 2009. That calls Raimondo's judgement and business acumen into question now that the company has gone out of business, potentially costing the state and Raimondo's former venture capital fund, Point Judith Capital, millions of dollars.

Barrett Bready

Like his friend and ally Gina Raimondo, the former CEO of Nabsys turned a deaf ear to the warnings from company founder Xinsheng Sean Ling about lack of crucial pieces of technology that were needed to maket the genome mapping startup a success. Bready, who along with his wife has donated over $15,000 to Raimondo's campaign funds, remains a member of the I-195 Commission. We need people with judgement and who know how to listen serving on that crucial commission, not folks who just happen to know the right people.

Slater Fund

The state and federal funded technology investment fund has plenty of egg on its face now that Nabsys, the genome mapping technology company has closed up shop. The Slater Fund had invested roughly $1 million in the company and that's comprised of all taxpayer dollars. Adding insult to injury, the Slater Fund once bragged about Nabsys, calling it a success story.

Providence School Department

The Providence School Department has come under fire by long time state senator Harold Metts, according to a GoLocalProv report this week. Metts is concerned that the school department is increasingly being led by white folks and therefore is under-represented by people of color. Metts is right to call for a Providence School Department administration that's as diverse as the student body.

Jorge Elorza

It's been hard to follow the Mayor's logic on the platoon restructuring of the fire department with respect to the court battle that's followed. When RI Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Lanphear ruled that the union can go to grievance arbitration with the city over the issue, Elorza said he was "excited" about the decision.Yet just days later, Elorza and the city decided to appeal the decision. The mixed signals coming out of city hall can be, at time, as confusing as they are frustrating.

Tom Brady

The Patriots quarterback probably won himself few friends in his home territory of New England when he endorsed Donald Trump earlier this week. It's probably would have been wiser for Brady to stick to the intricacies of football than answer questions about the world of politics (Though one could argue that Brady's standing alongside Trump was cool since Trump has been emphatic in his support of Brady throughout the deflategate saga).
