Marty Walsh

If Rhode Islanders want to see what real leadership looks like, take a look at Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, who told the Olympic Committee to get lost on Monday, because he refused to put Boston taxpayers at risk. " I refuse to mortgage the future of the city away. I refuse to put Boston on the hook for overruns. And I refuse to commit to signing a
guarantee that uses taxpayer dollars to pay for the Olympics," the mayorsaid. With respect to the Pawtucket Red Sox, Rhode Island political leaders need to understand Walsh's point that no deal is better than being ripped
off.

James Langevin

The Congressman, who has been wheelchair bound since he was a teenager after an accidental discharge of a firearm, commemorated the 25th anniverary of the Americans With Disabilities Act, alongside other
advocates for the disabled last weekend. Look, not everyone has to agree with all of Langevin's political stances, but everyone can appreciate the fact that the Congressman is an inspiration to those living with disabilities. And the fact that he's fighting to do more on that front means he deserves kudos.

Paul Archetto

The Cranston councilman lands himself on this week's "hot" list for questioning why the mayor called the police on an individual who called his house at around 9 p.m. last week. "I served in the General Assembly. I'm in my 7th year on council.  I've gotten calls well into 11 [PM], midnight,  1 [AM] during ticketgate," said Archetto.  "I'm used to it." Imagine that neither Archetto, nor countless other Rhode Island officials, call the police when people call them for information.

Jeff Britt

Maybe it's time Rhode Islanders start listening to the Rhode Island political operative? First Britt warned Pawtucket residents that former House Speaker John Harwood's tenure was coming to an end during an election almost 15 years ago. Then in 2012, he ran Mark Binder's insurgent campaign on the East Side of Providence against former House Speaker Gordon Fox, who later pled guilty to taking a bribe. Last year, as Ken Block's campaign manager, he told anyone who would listen that there was more than met the eye to "ticketgate" in Cranston.

Donald Grebien

The Pawtucket Mayor has released a much-needed plan to revitalize the city's downtown, which would "create a larger geographic “downtown” by strengthening the connections between the recent mill redevelopments and the commercial Main and Exchange Street corridors, and by attracting and fostering the growth of new market segments and diversity to fuel a downtown renaissance." It sounds great on paper, but now the Mayor needs to try and implement it. In any event, it's a good start.

Jorge Elorza

The Mayor of Providence has reorganized and streamlined the office of constituent services in a way that he believes will make it more efficient and effective. It remains to be seen if he'll be successful, butthe fact that he's trying is a good sign. "When people call this office they know that they will be greeted by a friendly, responsive member of our
team and that they will receive a call back in a timely manner with astatus update. Taxpayers deserve the highest quality city services and I am committed to making sure that we are constantly working to provide the best
possible experience for our residents," he said.

Allan Fung

The cover letter from the investigation of the Cranston Police Department by the Rhode Island State Police painted the Cranston Mayor in a very negative light. "Complaints were also received about political interference and influence from you and your staff, as well as the extraordinary relationship between the IBPO, Local 301 President Stephen Antonucci, the Chief of Police Marco Palombo, and you". The letter adds that Fung refused to fully comply with the investigation, and even worked to undermine it. All this, and the full report hasn't yet been released. Yikes!

Brandon Bell

When asked for commet on "Cranston Policegate" by GoLocalProv this week, the Rhode Island GOP Chairman said that Fung had "courage" when he called in the state police to investigate the Cranston Police Department last year. What Chairman Bell didn't say was the fact that the Mayor only called on the state police hours before the City Council was about to make the same request.  Yes, Bell was in a predicament when asked about the Cranston situation, but its seems like "I need more information", would have been enough of a comment.

Pawtucket Red Sox ownership

Now that Boston Mayor Marty Walsh has shown the Olympic Committee the door and made a strong stand for fiscal responsibility, that may very well put pressure on Rhode Island political leaders to stand up for the taxpayers and reject a deal that enriches the wealthy owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox at the expense of average Rhode Islanders. Here's hoping that that's the case anyways!

4,076

That's the amount of people still living in Rhode Island without a home according to the most recent numbers from the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless. That number was highlighted this week after advocates
held a candlelight vigil for a homeless man named Michael Lewis, who died on the streets of West Warwick in late June. Fortunately, the number of homeless in RI has dropped in recent years, but until that number drops to
0, there is work to be done.

Measles

One week after parents and families in Barrington were alerted that their children were in contact with someone who may have the virus, the Rhode Island Department of Health is still awaiting test results from the Centers For Disease Control to show whether or not that is, in fact, a case of measles. This whole situation just highlights, once again, how
important it it to have children vaccinated for this dangerous diseases.

Roger Goodell

The NFL Commissioner's tenure is starting to become a joke. In upholding the 4-game suspension given to superstar Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, he has given him the same suspension (for what amounts to an
equipment violation) as Greg Hardy, who committed a horrific act of domestic violence. So much for the "no more" campaign, which was apparently empty rhetoric and a public relations stunt.
