Tom Brady

The New England Patriots star quarterback will be right where he should be on the NFL's opening night next Thursday, starting the game and watching the Superbowl banner being raised beforehand. Federal Court Judge Richard Berman vacated a 4-game suspension for Brady that was imposed by the NFL over his "more probable than not" role in deflating footballs before games, and encouraged both sides to work out a fair settlement outside of court. Let's face it, even if Brady knew about a scheme to take a minuscule amount of air pressure out of the footballs, let call it was it was, an equipment violation that should've been subject to a small fine at most.

Nicole Alexander-Scott

The state's Director of Public Health will serve as the honorary chair of the annual 2-mile AIDS Walk RI that is happening  on Sunday, September 13 that begins at the statehouse and begins at noon with a speaking program. The walk is a good opportunity to spread awareness about the still devastating disease (despite the medical advances over the last decade), and the need for testing, and for comprehensive services for people living with the disease.

Brown University Males

The ladies and gay males of Tinder have spoken, and according to them, the males at Brown University are hot. Brown University had the 12th most "swipe rights" in the country according to the company's survey last spring semester. Not so hot were Boston College dudes, who reportedly ranked last.

No Bully

The non-profit organization that trains schools how to use student empathy to stop bullying has partnered with the City of Pawtucket and Hasbro, to make the city's schools bully free. The non-profit will train teachers on how to more effectively recognize bullying, and how to neutralize it before students become victimized. It's nice to see the city of Pawtucket, and Hasbro, a good corporate citizen, step forward to help address this problem. Students need to be concerned with learning, not their safety, when they go to school.

Bananagrams

The Providence based game company, whose namesake award winning word game, which was founded by the late Pawtucket native Abraham Nathanson, announced its first Official Bannagrams Tournament will take place early next year. The tournament is free to enter and open to 500 schools throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. It's nice to see Rhode Island based companies doing cool things for Rhode Island schools. And it makes sense since it's an educational game.

Providence College Basketball

Well the men's team no longer has LaDontae Henton or future superstar Paschal Chukwu, they've got Ludacris! The A-list rapper/hip hop artist will headline the men's and women's team's late night madness party to kick off the basketball season this autumn. Hopefully the rapper remembers to lay off his trademark vulgarity.

Dan McKee

Last year, when he was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor, McKee called for a "third party investigation into 38 studios by an independent" investigation into the demise of 38 studios. Since he's become the state's Lieutenant Governor, he hasn't led the charge on the front the way he did when he was a candidate. And McKee was supposedly leading an effort to bring regionalization to Rhode Island's municipal governments, but that effort has bore no fruit as of yet. Is the reformer he claimed to be, or is he just politics as usual?

Nicholas Mattiello

Maybe the House Speaker isn't as powerful as everyone thought after all. The Speaker promised a fall session to discuss tolls and a potential stadium deal (and taxpayer funded subsidy) for the wealthy Pawtucket Red Sox owners, but that hasn't been scheduled yet, and the discussion surrounding a potential fall session has gone quiet. Also, his comments make it seem like he is content with the investigation into the 38 studios demise, and that makes him sound out of touch with the electorate.

Bryant University

The school year got off to a bad start for Bryant University as what was supposed to be the school's new training facility partially collapsed on Tuesday morning, injuring six individuals (reportedly, none of the injuries are life threatening). The new training facility was supposed to open this winter and include a full sized-football turf field for training for lacrosse, field hockey, football and other sports.

Jorge Elorza

The Mayor's relationship with the Providence Firefighters Union doesn't seem to be getting better any time soon. The firefighters union has scheduled a rally to take place next Tuesday, just before the next city council meeting at city hall. Elorza is right to look for budget savings, since the city is in a very difficult financial position, but it just seems like the mayor is losing the public relations battle on this issue.

Providence Graffiti

The historic Lippitt House, located on Hope Street, was subject to some nasty graffiti last week, and neighbors caught the miscreants on video doing their disgusting deed. Graffiti is as disrespectful as it is disgusting, and plagues the whole city of Providence as well as most other communities in Rhode Island. Kudos to the east side residents for capturing the criminals on video and reporting it to the authorities though.

Roger Goodell

Once again, the NFL Commissioner looks foolish in federal court thanks to Roger Goodell. The decision by federal judge Richard Berman to lift Tom Brady's four game suspension saying it was based on "premised upon several significant legal deficiencies,'' and lacked a fair due process in his scathing 40 page decision. It's not just Brady that's had NFL disciplinary decisions overturned--there's also Ray Rice, Greg Hardy, and Adrian Peterson. Goodell's competency should and will come under further scrutiny after this decision.
