The Attorney General has brought a lawsuit against the Warwick Retirement Board for violating the state's Open Meetings act when it held a meeting earlier this March but didn't give the public a 48-hour notice, and also discussed matters behind closed doors that should have been held out in public view. Rhode Island is lucky to have an Attorney General with a commitment to transparency and who will hold public bodies accountable when necessary.

The Holy Cross economist laid down some serious straight talk on Wednesday afternoon. The well-respected professor made it clear that public subsidies are great for minor league baseball team owners, but do very little for the economy. He also pointed out that if Rhode Island takes a hard-line stance with the team, Massachusetts leaders certainly aren't in a rush to offer the team taxpayer money.

The Women's Fund of Rhode Island selected the Senate President to receive this year’s Susan L. Farmer Award, due to “her pioneering roles in government leadership and her support for Rhode Island’s groundbreaking Temporary Caregivers Insurance program.” Paiva Weed also recently came out in support of getting rid of the mandatory minimum corporate tax, which is a burden on small businesses that we don't need.

The Providence City Councilman deserves credit for showing leadership by speaking out against the Providence Street Car Proposal. The Proposal might be an interesting concept if the city weren't drowning in red ink and had school buildings in need of serious repairs. There are clearly other, more important priorities for the capital city right now.

The State Representative from South Providence will get one year of probation and a 1,000 fine after accepting fault on a misdemeanor charge stemming from an investigation into his campaign finance reports. Fortunately for Almeida, the charge was reduced from a felony down to a misdemeanor, but it wasn't a good week for him in any event.

Warwick Retirement Board
The Retirement Board should know better than to hold a meeting less than 48 hours after the notice of said meeting was posted and to discuss issues in a closed session that should be discussed out in the open. Kudos to former Warwick Councilman Robert Cushman for bringing this issue to light.

NFL
The NFL handed superstar New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady a punishment that can only be regarded as draconian by suspending him for four games. Yes, Brady was less than forthcoming with NFL investigators; but it's almost downright laughable that a conspiracy to take a pound of pressure out of a football is worthy of a severe suspension when the NFL has suspended domestic abusers for less games.
