Providence Police Make Multiple Gun Arrests Over Weekend

Providence police have made multiple gun arrests in the city over the weekend.
In Rhode Island, gun safety advocates held a rally at the State House this week and officials — and candidates — are urging House Speaker Joe Shekarchi and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio to ban high capacity magazines and assault rifles.

Saturday
Shortly after 2:30 AM Saturday morning, police said they were on patrol in the area of Eddy Street and Thurbers Avenue when they observed an SUV operating with no taillights.
According to police, they said the vehicle was driven erratically before it entered the parking lot of the Burger King on Thurbers Avenue, which was closed at the time.
Police said they followed the vehicle into the lot and went to conduct a traffic stop, at which time the driver appeared to try to conceal an item under his seat.
Upon having vehicle occupants exit the vehicle, police said they found an open liquor bottle, marijuana, and a loaded gun under the driver’s seat.
The vehicle operator, Carey Burrell, age 20, was taken to Central Station and is facing charges of possessing a firearm without a license.
The items in the vehicle were placed in police possession.
Sunday
At approximately 2 AM Sunday morning, police on detail outside of clubs on Broad Street said they observed a black SUV speeding on Sumter Street.
Police said upon conducting a traffic stop, that they detected marijuana in the vehicle and said the vehicle driver, Rashawn Howard, age 34, was acting nervously.
At that time police said that they told the vehicle occupants to step out of the SUV.
Police say they searched the vehicle and located a gun under the driver’s seat.
Howard was arrested and taken to Central Station for charging.
