Fit for Life: COVID Hit Us……Good!
Saturday, March 27, 2021
I was listening to a podcast from Navy Seal/author of Extreme Ownership - Jocko Willink, and he talks about how you can either dwell on a bad situation or you can turn it around, say the word GOOD, then find something positive to express and turn the statement around.
So, what are some things we can say, or twist around about what we went through in 2020 and turn the bad into GOOD?
Covid hit and restaurants shut down. GOOD (not for the restaurants) because now I am forced to make my own meals and eat more consciously. When you eat out, you don’t know all the hidden calories that go into food, so by cooking at home, you save a lot of calories.

I talked to some owners, and they said that because they cut payroll, put their staff on unemployment, they were able to make even MORE money, and do less work with less headaches by doing strictly takeout. People were conscious of this (myself included) so workers were getting better tips to help support the shortfall of cash.
If you were placed on unemployment, you could say GOOD, I am getting an extra $600 weekly, so now I can save money, and either stay at home or find constructive and productive ways to spend my time. Some people actually used their time efficiently and created other sources of revenue & had more time to work out and get fit.
Tough Business Year
My gym closed down and I lost 40% of my membership base. GOOD, now we can pay more attention to the ones that stayed and help them get great results. We went over and beyond for our loyal following by creating extra value with our program, by offering online workouts and a bunch of fun challenges to keep them accountable and engaged.
I lost revenue because I kept paying my rent & staff throughout the whole pandemic. GOOD, now I qualify for PPP funds and I got to keep an outstanding group of individuals on my team. I could have put them on unemployment and saved a bunch of cash but wanted to stay in our routine. Either I would be writing the checks, or the government would, so I decided to.
People need to sign up for sessions now as opposed to just dropping in. GOOD, now the coaches can plan the workouts better, and we have a tighter handle on keeping people accountable to showing up for their workouts. Our systems are more efficient and dialed in because of this, so when we add more members, we can serve them better.
I couldn’t travel. GOOD, I saved money and got totally out of credit card debt. This was one of my biggest expenses, so without it, my credit cards went down and now I am totally debt-free.
People are paranoid about germs. GOOD, now people wash their hands and wear masks so they don’t spread their germs to everyone else. Hygiene is a noticeable problem for most people, so by making the whole world more conscious, we are in a better place when it comes to spreading germs and viruses.
We were locked down for months. You could say GOOD, now I have the time to focus on my health and fitness and spend time with my family. Many people actually enjoyed the quality time they were able to spend with immediate family.
Sure, in some / most cases it got old fast, however bonding with family, especially if you have kids, was a good thing.
Some people sat on the couch and gained a ton of weight, but others-built home gyms, and trained like machines, getting in the best shape of their lives.
This is a tactic you can use with any situation in your life.
Don’t misunderstand the point I am trying to get across.
Covid was bad for all of us. 560,000 people died in this country, lots of businesses closed, and it caused havoc on our health care system, so there was nothing good about it.
It’s the mindset, attitude, and thought process that I am trying to hit home with.
Adversity and bad shit is going to happen to us throughout our lifetime, and we all have a choice on how to handle it.
You can either dwell on the negative aspects of what life will deal us, OR you can dig deep, flip the switch and find something positive to focus on.
Yes, Covid was bad for me on a lot of levels, but I also was able to turn some things around in my business, trim some unnecessary expenses, home in on the important things, and reset in time for things to return to normal.
Lose your job? GOOD, now you can find a better one. Your car broke down? GOOD, now you can get a better one. Fail at something? GOOD, now you can figure out where you went wrong and find a better was.
It’s up to you how you handle adversity and focusing on the negative will only put you in a worse position, so flip that switch, learn from adversity and strive to improve on some level every day.
Pandemic or not, there is always an opportunity to learn and grow.
Committed to your success,
Coach Matt
