Cage the Elephant Headlines the April Fools Day Bash Tonight

April Fool’s Day brings a heavy dose of rock and roll to the Dunkin' Donuts Center. No kidding. It’s been a little slow lately for concerts at the Dunk, but that begins to change tonight. A number of national acts are scheduled in the coming months including (country) “Stars With Guitars” in May, Janet Jackson in June, and a just announced show with Carrie Underwood in September. We’ve got the April Fool’s Bash and more this week in our slideshow “5 Live Music Musts.”

We interviewed Boston based reggae star Mighty Mystic last summer as he was finishing his (now released) album The Art of the Balance. Mystic is actually Jamaican born Kevin Mark Holness, and is part of the modern reggae movement, which brings elements of rock, funk and hip-hop to the traditional reggae sound. Tomorrow’s appearance at the Wheelhouse in Narragansett is part of the “Giant Drive for Hunger,” and three non-perishable food items will get you $5 off at the door. James and the Giants open around 6PM. Further details here.

Jonathan Richman at Met

Jonathan Richman was present at the birth of punk rock. He hung out with the Velvet Underground in the late 60’s and later went on to form the Modern Lovers, a proto-punk band best known for the FM radio hit “Roadrunner” ("I’m in love with Massachusetts, with the radio on”). These days, he’s struming a more stripped down sound with musical partner and drummer Tommy Larkins, a veteran of notable bands Giant Sand and Naked Prey. They’ll be at The Met Tuesday night April 5th. Tickets are $20 – show begins at promptly at 9:15.
