The Quahogs Play the Columbus Theatre Saturday

Rock and Roll rules the roost this week as we continue to focus on the best in local music. We throw in a helping or two of R&B and present our weekly musical round up “5 Live Music Musts.”

The Quahogs at the Columbus Theatre Saturday

They’ll be an abundance of rock and roll at the Columbus Theatre tomorrow night with a record release show from the Quahogs. The RI band features the unique rasp of Steve Delmonico – a voice that sounds like its being processed through a fuzz pedal and makes Bob Dylan sound conventional. The band is releasing Sunny Waste, an album recorded at Eyeland Studios at the Columbus. Also on the bill, Smith & Weeden, and Hott Boyz, a new local supergroup with Roz Raskin from Roz and The Rice Cakes, Kate Jones from The Sugar Honey Iced Tea, and Sarah Greenwell from Gymshorts. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day of show. Music starts at 9PM.

Downtown Boys at Aurora Saturday

Downtown Boys made a splash recently in the pages of Rolling Stone when the magazine anointed the Providence group as “America’s most exciting punk band.” That puts them in pretty damn good company. The band knows how to make a statement with politically charged lyrics and over the top live performances. They play Aurora downtown tomorrow night along with fellow travelers Dent, Gamma Pope and Homesuperior. Tickets are $7 for the 9PM show.

Kool and the Gang at Twin River Saturday

Kool and the Gang are one of the biggest R&B groups ever, with over 70 million albums sold, two Grammy awards, 7 American Music Awards, and 31 Gold and Platinum albums. They’ve been together for almost 50 years, the longest continuous run for an R&B band. Most importantly, their show is a damn good time with hits like "Jungle Boogie," "Cherish" and the all time wedding band classic "Celebrate." Doors at 7PM, show at 8PM. Tickets available here starting at $35.

St. Paul and the Broken Bones

St. Paul and the Broken Bones at Lupo’s Sunday

Lupo’s hosts a big show Sunday night when Birmingham, Alabama’s St. Paul and the Broken Bones arrive in town. The band brings a soulful mix of R&B featuring lead vocalist Paul Janeway who sounds eerily like Otis Redding. They’re a big part of the neo-Soul movement shaking up Indie music. Roots-Country rockers Banditos open. Tickets are $20 in advance, $24 at the door. Music starts at 8PM.

Von Donovan at Nick-A-Nees Saturday

Reigning dive bar champion Nick-A-Nees in Providence hosts Rhode Island indie band Von Donovan tomorrow night. The band has a post-punk blues sound with excessive guitar reverb that creates a wonderful effect as if the sound is coming from a room down the hall. You’ll hear haunting originals and covers with themes of love, loss, redemption and revenge. Fans of The Cure, Mazzy Star and even Jimi Hendrix will want to check them out tomorrow night at Nick-A-Nees. No cover, music begins around 9PM.

NRBQ at Narrows Center

Two “new” bands appear next week at our America’s best roots venue, The Narrows Center. Actually neither band is a new act, they just have the word “New” in their name. The New Riders of the Purple Sage are one of the original psychedelic country rock bands going back to the early 70’s. NRBQ (New Rhythm and Blues Quartet) might sound like a jazz band and the latest offering from keyboardist and band leader Terry Adams (Talk Thelonius) is in fact an album based on the work of jazz legend Thelonius Monk. Two shows not to be missed! Details here. Check out our interview from a year ago with Adams here.

Deer Tick at Lupos

Ring in the new year Saturday night January 2nd at Lupo’s with a homecoming show from RI natives Deer Tick. As their national presence continues to grow, we see less and less of Nashville transplant John McCauley, so its pretty much guaranteed he’ll be leading the boys through a major blowout at Lupo’s. As DT fans know, anything can happen at a Deer Tick show - with special guests a strong possibility. Tickets are $25 in advance and $28 at the door. Last Good Tooth opens. More details available here.

The Drive By Truckers are a southern rock band that have been defying stereotypes for almost 20 years. The songwriting of Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley is some of the best around and their three guitar attack of straight up rock and roll will leave your ears ringing. They return to RI and make their debut at the Columbus Theatre on March 9. For a preview, check out their recent live album It’s Great to be Alive. Tickets available here.
