Well, it’s not simple, because not all four of the Division I teams play each other.

Think "Game of Thrones" — lots of little empires in different levels of chaos.

But the winner of the Providence College versus Brown University game on Sunday at the Civic Center/Dunk/AMP should claim the crown and a coronation. Brown and PC have not played each other in 6 years - more on that below.

Heading into the PC and Brown matchup, here is how everyone sits:

URI is out of contention. The Rams lost to PC at the Civic Center/Dunk/AMP last Saturday night and then were upset by Brown at the Ryan Center. Archie Miller’s team is beginning to flounder, having lost 4 of its last 6 games.

Bryant will want to claim the crown if Brown wins. The Bulldogs had a come-from-behind victory over the Bears a little over a week ago, and neither URI nor PC will play Bryant. The Bulldogs appear to have successfully transitioned from the chaotic leadership of Jared Grasso. And, the new coach Phil Martelli Jr.’s Bulldogs have won 5 of 6 games.

A PC victory secures the crown. Make no mistake about it, if the Friars beat the Bears, then they are the unconditional and benevolent royal leader of Rhode Island basketball — similar in stature to the head of the Crown of Liechtenstein.

A Brown victory could make the case. A Bears win would allow the most unlikely team to claim the realm -- Coach Mike Martin’s Bears are just 2-8 against D-I opponents, and one of their wins is against URI, a Brown victory in which they did not score a field goal in the last 6 minutes

A little backstory.  Former PC Coach Ed Cooley dropped the annual game against Brown because he kept losing and almost lost a couple of other games. In a six-year period, Brown beat PC twice and almost won two other games.

The last time the two teams met, Cooley's Friars beat Martin's Bears in 2017, 77-72.
