The incident took place on Sunday, October 1 — two days after Grasso went on leave.

Grasso Claims “An Attack Going On”

The North Smithfield Police report filed by patrolman Justin Switzer paints a picture of an unstable and conspiratorial Grasso.

"Jared began rambling and stated that he would like his attorney there. I told him that's fine and informed him that he was being charged with leaving the scene of an accident to an attended vehicle. Jared continued to ramble and wouldn't allow me to speak. I told him that I was not asking him any questions but simply trying to explain our process and what the next steps would be. Jared stated that there was ‘an attack going on,’” according to the report.

“[Grasso] seemed to believe that there was a bigger conspiracy going on and indicated that I was involved. I told Jared that I was confused with what he was saying and wasn't familiar with the situation. He asked me several times, ‘Are you sure?’ and didn't seem to believe me. He continued making statements about being attacked and being involved in some type of situation. Eventually, his wife exits the house and asked what was going on. He [Grasso] told her several times to 'get back in the house' which she does,” Switzer’s report states.

Switzer writes in the report, "I listened to Jared speak even though I was not familiar with what he was talking about. He appeared to think I was involved in this situation. I told Jared ‘I’m sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about.’ Jared's behavior was erratic and the conversation was not getting anywhere. His wife came back outside again and told Jared that he had a phone call so that he would go inside the house. I was able to speak with Jared's wife and explain everything to her.”

Wife and Lawyer

Grasso’s wife, Andrea, then intervened and contacted Grasso’s attorney, Providence-based Craig Montecalvo.

“After a few minutes, Jared came back outside and was now telling me that his wife was driving vehicle #2. He also claimed to have never told me that he was driving vehicle #2 yesterday. Jared continued with his erratic behavior and was not cooperative. At this time, I told Jared that I was leaving and that I would be getting a warrant for his arrest. Jared was standing between myself and my cruiser when he stated, ‘No, you're not leaving,’” according to Switzer’s report.

“I asked dispatch to send an additional unit code 1. His wife was able to get him back inside the house. I then spoke to Jared's wife who also had his lawyer on the phone. His wife and lawyer were very cooperative. His lawyer, Craig Montecalvo, agreed to arrange a date and time for Jared to turn himself in. While I was speaking with them, Jared came outside on the phone and stated, 'The North Smithfield Police are already on their way here." I cleared the scene after speaking with Jared's lawyer. Later, I was advised by dispatch that Jared had contacted 911 several times while I was on scene,” wrote Switzer.

Grasso is scheduled to appear in court on October 24.
