Now, Thomas Partey has been denied entry into Canada and will miss the opening World Cup game.
“His visa application has been refused by the Canadian government,” a FIFA spokesperson told the Star. Under Canadian immigration law, a person may not be allowed into Canada if they “committed or been convicted of a crime.”
“FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas,” the spokesperson said. “As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”
Ghana, the 73rd ranked men’s team by FIFA, is set to open their tournament at Toronto Stadium, also known as BMO Field, against Panama.
Partey is still able to participate in World Cup matches taking place in the U.S. and is scheduled to be in Rhode Island in the coming days.
