Rhode Island is hoping to be a big winner when the world comes for the biggest event. Gillette Stadium will host seven matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.  Providence is a closer and less expensive option for fans than Boston.

Cancelations

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Friday:

“But now, with only three months until kickoff, the governing body of the tournament is clawing back its hotel bookings.

FIFA canceled 2,000 of its 10,000 hotel room reservations in Philadelphia last week. The group exercising a last-minute opt-out clause in their contract, according to sources who were not authorized to speak on the record. Philly is not the only city to experience FIFA hotel cancellations, as FIFA reportedly canceled 40% of its hotel bookings in Mexico City earlier this month."

There is no word if FIFA has made cancellations in New England.

Providence - Team Base Camp for Ghana

Providence has been selected as the official "Team Base Camp" for the Ghana Football Association during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Bryant University will serve as the team's official training site.

According to state officials, the Ghana "Black Stars" will use Bryant’s 43,000-square-foot field house and state-of-the-art training, recovery, and wellness center in Smithfield.

Moreover, the fields at Bryant University are maintained by the same groundskeeper who will be overseeing the pitches at Gillette Stadium, say officials.

“Bryant University is honored to welcome the Ghana Men’s National Team and to serve as its training base for the FIFA World Cup 2026,” said Bryant President Dr. Ross Gittell.

“It is a recognition of Bryant’s best-in-class facilities and the global appeal of our campus and university. We look forward to the partnerships, the visibility, and the enthusiasm that this opportunity will bring to Rhode Island, New England, and well beyond.”
