From a duck leading the Tartan Army to thousands attending the World Cup watch party in Providence, Rhode Islanders are hooked on the World Cup.

For those needing statistical proof, the data is clear. Of the top ten Google searches in Rhode Island in the past seven days, six were related to World Cup searches. The top six.

Despite it being an election year in Rhode Island, America’s 250th Anniversary, and the country being at war with Iran, none of those topics made the top 10.

World Cup-related searches dominate.

The top ten searches combined total more than 45,000, and more than 37,000 of those searches relate to the World Cup.

Thank You, Cabo Verde Team

While the United States World Cup team has been a top performer and captured great attention, it has been the Cabo Verde team that has delighted Rhode Island and the world.

Cabo Verde has a population of 650,000, and according to U.S. Census data, more than 26,000 Rhode Islanders are of Cape Verdean descent. Rhode Island is second only to Massachusetts (about 90,000) in terms of population.

The Cape Verdean team opened the World Cup with a shocking 0-0 tie against the powerful Spanish team — which is now ranked third in the world, according to FIFA.

Cabo Verde followed up the “upset “of Spain with two more ties and has now qualified for the round of 32.

Cabo Verde is now ranked 64th in the world.

The only non-World Cup searches to make the top 10 — Red Sox vs Yankees, NBA draft, and two relating to weather.

The fever continues as the United States plays Bosnia in the knockout round on Wednesday, and Cabo Verde plays FIFA's top-ranked team, Argentina, on Friday.

The fever continues.
