Brown, URI Football to Renew Rivalry in 104th Governor’s Cup Game
Saturday, October 05, 2019
The Brown Bears and University of Rhode Island Rams (URI) will renew their rivalry on Saturday in the 104th Governor’s Cup Game at Brown Stadium.
The Rams will look to defend their title after beating Brown 48-0 in last year’s game.
“We have been back and forth over the years and you start getting some experience as to what this game is all about and what it means. To be able to see that cup be taken from you is something that we have all experienced, on both sides, so we do fight for it, it is a very important piece,” said URI head coach Jim Fleming during the Governor’s Cup press conference.

“This is very special for me to be here, both because this game is special and its a reminder of how lucky I am to have the job that I do. I get to coach at Brown University, I get to coach great players and I get to coach Division I football games," said Perry during the Governor's Cup press conference.
The Bears enter with a record of 1-1 overall, while URI comes in with a record of 0-4.
“Coach Fleming has done a fantastic job, we are well aware of that. If we weren’t, all we have to do is put the film on of last year to know that this is a terrific football team, one of the best in all of the FCS,” added Perry.
Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.
Brown vs URI
Brown and Rhode Island have met 103 times, dating back to 1909, with the Bears holding a 73-28-2 series advantage over the Rams.
Last season, URI earned its first-ever shutout win over the Bears, 48-0, at Meade Stadium.
Prior to that, Brown won the Cup in 2017 by rallying to score 21 unanswered points in the third quarter and escape with a 24-21 win.
Over the last 10 years, Brown is 7-3 against the Rams.
Brown Offense vs URI Defense
Through four games this season, the URI defense is giving up an average of 35.8 points and 474 total yards per game.
Rhod Island is led by senior safety Brian Campbell, who posted a career-high 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, forced fumble and pass beak up last week against Stony Brookey.
Campbell is also second on the team in tackles with 36, and leads Rhode Island with 1.5 sacks.
Upfront, the defense is led by linebacker Brandon Javier-Castillo, who is averaging a league-best 10.3 tacks per game.
He ranks 13th in the country in tackles per game.
On the other side, the Brown offense will look to bounce back after putting up just seven points on the road against Harvard last week.
Through just two games, Brown is averaging 21 points, 192 rushing yards and 188 passing yards per game.
The Bears offense is led by quarterback EJ Perry, who has completed 38 of 59 passes for 345 yards with three touchdowns and an interception on the year.
Against Harvard last week, Perry completed 17 of 27 passes for 162 yards, but was sacked five times.
Out of the backfield, Brown is led by Allen Smith, who has carried the ball 21 times for 121 yards and touchdown this year.

Brown Defense vs URI Offense
Through two games, the Brown defense has given up an average of 36 points, 158 rushing yards and 351 passing yards per game.
The defense is led by linebacker Brendan Pyne, who racked up four tackles against Bryant and five tackles last week against Harvard.
Pyne led the Ivy League in solo tackles with 48 in 2018.
In the defensive backfield, Brown is led by corner Charlie Dallape and safety Clay Perrin.
On the other side, the URI offense has averaged 27 points, 332 passing yards and 407 total yards per game.

Aaron Parker leads URI’s group of receivers with 35 catches for 595 yards and four touchdowns.
“We, in this state, have the best wide receiver in the country. Aaron is the best in the country. I’ve coached great wideouts, coached against great wideouts and he is the best in the country. He competes as if he is the best and it's very very clear and I think everyone should take a lot of pride in that, “ said Perry.
Parker averages 8.8 catches per game for the Rams.
Following Parker is Isaiah Coulter, who has hauled in 22 catches for 334 yards and three touchdowns.
Out of the backfield, Rhode Island relies heavily on Zoe Bryant Jr.
