After Providence police said they believed the suspected rapist who was behind two attacks this week in the city was the suspect in another attempted assault overnight, they arrested a man who they don't believe is tied to the other attacks.

Latest Incident

Shortly after 11 PM on Thursday night, police were called to Pembroke Avenue in the Elmhurst section of the city for a report of a breaking and entering.

Police say they met with the victim — a woman in her early 20s — who said someone unknown to her had entered her apartment.

The woman, who was on the third floor, said someone had tried to enter her room; she told police her bedroom door was locked at the time.

She told officers she then heard multiple doors being opened and closed in the apartment, at which time she was the only person inside.

According to police, the woman said her friends returned to the apartment and encountered the suspect fleeing the residence through a back door.

The suspect was described to police as a 5’8”-5’9” black male wearing a white t-shirt, red baseball hat, black pants, and a black backpack.

Detectives are currently investigating.

As GoLocal reported on Thursday, “Police Warn of Rapist at Large in Providence — Urging Residents to Lock Doors and Windows:”

Providence police are urging residents to use caution after a man sexually assaulted a female college student this week and attempted to assault another woman.

According to police, they believe the suspect is staking out women during the day to determine when they might be home alone at night — and then entering through open windows.

Arrest Made

Providence Police issued the following statement on Friday evening, "Please be advised that Christopher James, age 34, who was arrested by Providence Police earlier today for a Breaking and Entering that occurred on Pembroke Avenue last night [Thursday] is not a suspect at this time in the recent incidents of sexual assault within the Elmhurst neighborhood.

Police believe the B&E is unrelated to the previous three incidents and urge residents in the area to continue to have a heightened awareness of their surroundings and alert police immediately at 272-3121 with information pertinent to this ongoing investigation."
