Dean Esserman’s downward spiral continues. The Police Chief in New Haven is now going out on “sick leave” and it seems unlikely that the former Providence Police Chief, and now New Haven Police Chief will ever return to his post.

Esserman who was forced to resign after a GoLocalProv investigation uncovered his hosting of a party in his home in which minor drank alcohol and smoked marijuana while the then police chief was at home.

He bounced back after his “resignation” in Providence and has had a series of well publicized out bursts as Chief in New Haven including threatening to cancel the Army v Yale football game when an usher asked him for his ticket at the game.

The Mayor of New Haven issues the following statement:

Mayor Toni N. Harp issued a statement regarding the status of Chief of Police Dean Esserman, who has been on leave since July 25, and the New Haven Police Department:

“I am eager for residents, property owners, and those visiting and doing business in New Haven to be assured their public safety requirements are being effectively met by the very capable command staff and officers of the New Haven Police Department.”

“The disciplinary leave of Chief Esserman, mutually agreed upon by the chief and me July 25th, ends today as scheduled, and will transition immediately to temporary sick leave, for which the chief will use earned and accrued sick time.”

“Police department operations will continue uninterrupted and public safety will remain its priority under the temporary command of Assistant Chief Campbell and in his absence, Assistant Chief Generoso.”

“Beyond that, given the City’s policy and practice of honoring a presumption of confidentiality in personnel matters, there will be no further comment.”

In July, GoLocal reported:

Former Providence Police Chief Dean Esserman is taking a leave of absence as Police Chief in New Haven.

Esserman, who got a no-confidence vote by the New Haven Police Union earlier in July, was under scrutiny by New Haven Mayor Toni Harp after reports he publicly berated a waitress in town over the weekend.

Fox61 reported Monday afternoon:

Following several controversial incidents in recent weeks and months, New Haven Police Chief Dean Esserman has agreed with Mayor Toni Harp to take a paid leave of absence. In a statement, New Haven Mayor Toni Harp said:

"Following my investigation of recent reports of conduct I consider unbecoming a public official, Chief of Police Dean Esserman and I have mutually agreed that he will take a 15 working-day, paid leave-of-absence, effective tomorrow. Beyond that, given the city’s policy and practice of honoring a presumption of confidentiality in personnel matters, there will be no further comment."

Army v. Yale Game

In December of 2014, GoLocal reported:

The Army-Yale football game incident came to light after a Yale Assistant Professor Dan Weinberger wrote a letter unveiling the verbal abuse by Esserman.

In the letter (see below) Weinberger outlines the incident and the threat by Esserman.

Prof. Weinberger

In an email response to GoLocal, Weinberger wrote, “Thanks for your email (I read your stories about the Chief). I don't have any further comment beyond what was written in my original letter.”

Weinberger is a professor of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at Yale School of Public Health. According to his bio at Yale, “He earned his PhD in biological sciences from Harvard School of Public Health in 2009 with a focus on microbiology and infectious disease epidemiology. He was then a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies in the Fogarty International Center, NIH until 2012.”
