Chief Dean Esserman

Dean Esserman, former Providence Police Chief and present New Haven Police Chief, threatened to “shut down the whole (Army-Yale football) game” after an usher had asked Esserman for a ticket and a supervisor had refused to “remove” the usher from the Yale Bowl.

Dean Esserman who was forced to resign as the Police Chief of Providence after GoLocalProv investigation uncovered that he had allowed his high school aged daughter and more than 100 friends have a drug and alcohol party at his home under his supervision.

The Army-Yale football game incident came to light after a Yale Assistant Professor Dan Weinberger wrote a letter unveiling the verbal abuse by Esserman.

Prof. Weinberger

In an email response to GoLocal, Weinberger wrote, “Thanks for your email (I read your stories about the Chief). I don't have any further comment beyond what was written in my original letter.”

Weinberger is a professor of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at Yale School of Public Health. According to his bio at Yale, “He earned his PhD in biological sciences from Harvard School of Public Health in 2009 with a focus on microbiology and infectious disease epidemiology. He was then a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies in the Fogarty International Center, NIH until 2012.”

After New Haven city officials received Weinberger’s letter, Aldermen passed the letter onto for review for potential disciplinary action.

According to the New Haven Register, “On Monday, the Board of Alders forwarded Weinberger’s letter to Board of Police Commissioners Chairman Anthony Dawson.”

As GoLocalProv reported on November 11, Mayor-Elect Elorza is rumored to be considering Esserman in his administration:

Speculation has been mounting that former Police Chief Dean Esserman -- who resigned in 2011 after hosting an underage drinking party for his daughters' high school graduation -- could be in contention for position in the Elorza administration.

"I've heard the rumors," said Providence Councilman Michael Correia (D-Ward 6), of the potential for Esserman to be in contention for the Commissioner of Public Safety Commission. "I've also heard Major [Francisco] Colon being talked about for Chief.  It's all hearsay until something happens.  I'm not sure what [Elorza] has in mind, but he'll be meeting with all of the City Council members for their input within the next week."

The letter by Weinberger was first reported by the New Haven Register.
