Duncan Powell Found Not Guilty, His Father Says PC Was Pushing for Charges to Avoid Paying NIL

Former Providence College Men’s Basketball player Duncan Powell has been found not guilty on domestic assault charges.
As GoLocal first reported, Powell was arrested in March 2026 by both Cranston and Providence Police after his ex-girlfriend accused him of assaulting her.
Following a three-day trial this week, Powell was found not guilty on Wednesday on two misdemeanor charges - “domestic violence, simple assault” and “domestic violence, disorderly conduct.”

“People were wondering why the prosecution was so hard on misdemeanors when there are other, more serious things going on,” said D.J. Powell.
Powell said his son - and family - have professed his innocence all along.
“It was Providence College that wanted the case to stick,” said Powell. “Because if the [charges] stuck, Duncan would be in violation of his NIL agreement.”
With the not guilty verdict in, “They would have to continue paying him the rest of the money that they owe him,” said Powell.
Powell, who would not disclose the exact amount, told GoLocal it is “significant.”
Following Wednesday’s verdict, Powell said his son is “OK.”
“He’s very mellow, unlike how he’s portrayed in social media,” said Powell. “He’s just ready to move on now.”
