MaryEllen Mataleska

MaryEllen Mataleska, Director of Education and Conservation, at Mystic Aquarium says World Oceans Day is important because it is now is a critical time for the ocean ecosystem in the world.

Mataleska explains much of our food and the medication we use comes from the ocean and the animals connected in the ecosystem so now is the time for all of us to take action, not just scientists, we can we all have an immense impact on the ocean.

To make one small change can do a great deal of good, Mataleska says, like saying no to a plastic straw, you can have a huge impact on the health of the ocean.

Another small change is to use reusable shopping bags, she says that can make an impact on the health of the ocean because every bit of trash in the ocean comes from humans.

Mataleska is responsible for much of the Conservation and Citizen Science programming at Mystic Aquarium and she says there is a World Oceans Day celebration on June 10.

This is breeding season for horseshoe crabs and they have a large ecological role. It’s also very important to take care of the ones we have Mataleska says, because they don’t migrate and no new ones come into the area.

There is Horseshoe Crab Watch and walk under the full moon on June 10.
