PC Falls to St. John’s - 3rd Straight Loss, Just 5 Games Left in Regular Season

The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the St. John's Red Storm, 92-81, Saturday, at Alumni Hall. The Friars fall to 9-10 overall and 5-8 in BIG EAST play.

It was the Friars third straight loss and with just five games left in the regular season there is no margin for error.

The bright spots were Nate Watson  registered a career-high 30 points in the game. And, Noah Horchler  scored a season-high 19 points. Both players corralled eight rebounds in the game.

The tough part was David Duke scored just 9 point on 3-8 shooting. This season, the Friars need Duke to score 20 or more to win.

 

GAME STORY

Horchler and A.J. Reeves scored the opening baskets for the Friars. At the 17:02 mark, Horchler knocked down his first three-pointer. Both teams played well offensively to start the game.

The Red Storm's Julian Champagnie had 12 points before the first media timeout. Following the pause in the action, St. John's added two three-pointers and forced Providence to use their first timeout. The Red Storm held a nine-point advantage, 23-14.

St. John's continued their hot streak from the field as the first half progressed. By the 10:57 mark, the Red Storm led 31-14 and were in the midst of a 19-0 scoring run. The team had made seven of their last eight three-point attempts.

With 9:02 left in the first half, Watson completed a three-point play. The basket broke a Friar scoring drought that had lasted over six minutes. The Red Storm maintained control, 36-21, through the 7:41 media timeout.

At the 4:00 mark, a layup by Watson capped off an 11-2 scoring run for the Friars to narrow the gap to 43-36. The Friars had made nine of their last 10 attempts from the field. The teams traded multiple baskets in the final stretch of the first half. With 0:55 remaining, Horchler made his fourth three-pointer. 

The Red Storm led at halftime, 49-41. Providence shot 16-35 (45.7%) from the field, 5-15 (33.3%) from three, and 4-5 (80.0%) from the free throw line. St. John's shot 19-30 (63.3%) from the field, 9-15 (60.0%) from three, and 2-2 (100%) from the free throw line.

To start the second half, freshman Alyn Breed  knocked down a three-pointer. Shortly after, Breed, Duke, and Reeves each scored. The Friars took the lead, 50-49. 

Providence had overcome a 17-point St. John's lead, which the Red Storm held at the 9:02 mark in the first half. Watson scored in the paint on three consecutive possessions leading up to the 15:35 media timeout. The Friars led 56-53. 

In response, St. John's took a 16-3 scoring run into the 8:53 timeout. At the 7:44 mark, Watson broke a Friar scoring drought with a second-chance layup. However, the Red Storm continued their run and preserved their lead. 

With 5:41 to play, Reeves buried a three-pointer. The Red Storm led 79-69. With just over three minutes left, Reeves added another basket from three-point territory. At the 1:09 mark, the Friars cut the deficit to eight following a free throw by Duke and second-chance dunk by Watson. The Red Storm closed out the game from the line. 

Providence finished 29-62 (46.8%) from the field, 8-26 (30.8%) from three, and 15-22 (68.2%) from the free throw line. St. John's finished 34-58 (58.6%) from the field, 10-19 (52.6%) from three, and 14-16 (87.5%) from the free throw line. Julian Champagnie and Posh Alexander led the way in scoring for the Red Storm with 24 and 21 points, respectively. 

The Friars finished with three players in double-figures in Watson, Horchler, and Reeves. Each team had 17 assists in the game, while St. John's outrebounded the Friars by two. 

 

NEXT UP:  The Friars will host the Connecticut Huskies on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The game is set for tip-off at 4 p.m. on FS1.
