The URI Rams defeated the George Washington Colonials 71-58 in the quarterfinals of the A-10 tournament in Brooklyn.  The win is URI's first A-10 Tournament victory since 2011. 

See the five takeaways slideshow below. 

URI led 49-48 with eight minutes to play in the second half before going on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 59-50 with five minutes left.

URI used their defense to lock down and wear down George Washington the rest of the way. The Rams  went on to win 71-58. 

E.C. Matthews led URI with 21 points while Jarvis Garrett and T.J. Buchanan each poured in 12 for the Rams. 

Patricio Garino led George Washington with 17 points in the game. 

The Rams now advance to the A-10 semifinals to face Dayton on Saturday, March 14. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and the game can be seen on the NBC Sports Network.

Jarvis Garrett

Freshman Jarvis Garrett started the game for URI and other than his four turnovers,  came up big. 

Garrett played 36 minutes, netted 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. 

Garrett also grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists for the Rams.

Dan Hurley

Dan Hurley continues to build the Rams into a year in and year out contender and this win is just the next step in the proces. The Rams get their first A-10 Tournament win since 2011. 

Now, URI takes on Dayton for a chance to get to the A-10 Title game and continue their push for a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

T.J. Buchanan

T.J. Buchanan came up big for URI in 27 minutes off the bench. Buchanan netted 12 points on 2-of-4 shooting from the field and 8-of-12 from the free throw line. 

T.J. Buchanan has now reached double-figures in three of the last four games for URI. 

Buchanan also grabbed four rebounds in the game.

E.C. Matthews

Like he has done all season, E.C. Matthews led the Rams with 21 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. 

This marks the seventh straight game in which E.C. Matthews has reached double-figures. 

Matthews nailed a three-pointer with with five minutes to go to help URI cap a 10-2 run to take a 59-50 lead in the game. 

Matthews also grabbed four rebounds and dished out one assist in the game.

Lock down defense

The Rams trailed 32-30 at the half and in the second half, used their lock down defense  to wear down George Washington. 

The Colonials scored 26 points in the second half while URI put up 41. 

George Washington shot 31% from the field and 6.3% from beyond the arc in the game. 

The Rams forced 13 turnovers, had six steals and nine blocked shots in the game. Five of those blocks came from Hassan Martin.
