URI Earns Streak Snapping 75-43 Win in Southern Miss

The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team (5-2) defeated (4-3) Southern Miss. 75-43 on Saturday night in Hattisburg. The win snaps Southern Miss' 38 game non-conference home winning streak and their 19 game overall home winning streak.

The Rams built up a ten point lead in the first half and never looked back, extending their lead to as much as 32 points throughout the game. Southern Miss. never got closer then 12 points at any time.

The night was mostly dominated by the Rams defense. URI held Southern Miss. to just 39 percent shooting at home and forcing 23 turnovers to keep the home crowd silent. 

Offensively, Rhode Island was led by sophomore, Hassan Martin, who had 15 points, three rebounds and two steals on the night. Freshman, Jared Terrell, was the only other Ram in double figures as he netted 12 points. Terrell also added two rebounds and two steals and an assist. 

Shadell Millinghaus led Southern Miss with 13 points in the loss. 

URI now has three days to prepare for their Wednesday night showdown with the Providence College Friars at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Jared Terrell

Freshman Jared Terrell had 12 points, two steals, two rebounds and one assist in the game for the Rams. 

This marks the third straight game in which Terrell has reached double-figures.

In fact, the only game in which Terrell failed to reach double-figures was the game against Kansas.

Off Game for E.C. Matthew

For the first time since the UMass Lowell game, the second game of the season, E.C. Matthews missed reaching double-figures. Matthews had eight points on two of eight shooting from the field. Both of the shots Matthews made were from beyond the three-point arc. He added two free throws to get to eight. 

Matthews did have five assists which led URI in this game and he added a rebound. 

An off night for E.C. Matthews but the rest of his team was able to pick him up.

Hassan Martin

Sophomore Hassan Martin led the Rams with 15 points, three rebounds, two steals and a block in 19 minutes of play time. 

Martin made seven of the eight shots that he took.

Martin reaches double-figures in scoring for the second straight game.

Dominating defense

The URI rams won this game on the defensive end, completely shutting down a Southern Miss. team who previously was nearly unbeatable at home. 

The Rams held Southern Miss. to 39 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent shooting from three-point land. They also forced Southern Miss. into 23 turnovers in the game, nine of which were steals. 

Biggie Minnis led the URI with four steals in the game. 

The Rams had 22 points off the 23 turnovers.

On to Providence

Let the hype and anticipation begin. Next up for the Rams they make the short trip to Providence to take on their in-state rival, Providence College. 

The game is on Wednesday, December 10 with tip-off at 7 p.m. at the Dunkin Donuts Center. 

It should be an incredible atmosphere.
