Every Friday, GoLocalProv takes a look at who is rising and who is falling in Rhode Island and national politics, business, culture, and sports.

This week's list includes old-time Providence corruption, Magaziner's definition of transparency, and Brown women.

Now, we are expanding the list, the political perspectives, and we are going to a GoLocal team approach while encouraging readers to suggest nominees for who is "HOT" and who is "NOT."

Brown Women's Soccer - Big Dance Bound

The Brown women's soccer team defeated Penn 1-0 last weekend to claim its second Ivy League title in as many seasons and 14th overall to become the most decorated program in Ivy League Women's Soccer history.

The Bears also receive the Ivy League's lone NCAA Automatic Qualifier and will appear in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in program history.

"I loved the energy and intensity that the team came out with today," head coach Kia McNeill said. "Obviously, we were playing for a lot. We were playing for our seniors. We were playing for a championship. I think you could see and feel the energy they were playing with."

Emerging RI Star

Providence native Troy Simpson might be going to grad school for finance, but he is hoping at the moment his future might just be in music.

This week, the Classical High School graduate and his band Graffiti Smile released their new music video, “Airplane."

Simpson, in the midst of getting ready for midterms, spoke with GoLocal about his musical upbringing — and aspirations.

“I feel fortunate to have this background and passion,” said Simpson, who grew up playing piano, but has also been honing his skills on guitar since college — which was Temple University for undergrad, and now Vanderbilt for grad school.

Simpson joined Graffiti Smile while at Temple, and says the reaction to the band’s music — and video — has been “fantastic.”

“For a first effort, we couldn't have asked for more,” said Simpson of the video. “We’re just trying to boost our exposure and trying to get in front of a label. We feel we have a lot of qualities that you see the most famous bands having — personality, distinct sound, and a bunch of different characters.”

“Music is the most important thing in my life for a number of reasons,” he added. “At the end of the day, my career in finance is always going to be there.”

The Grand Old Party

The Republican party was supposed to have been hijacked by Donald Trump and would never recover.

A combination of a Glenn Youngkin "Heisman" to Trump (he did not come into the state) and the remarkable performance by Jack Ciattarelli's near-win in New Jersey set the stage for a big GOP performance in the mid-terms.

Great Addition

One of the best new developments to Providence's landscape is the reuse of an old garage into the new Narragansett Brewery.

"The Narragansett Brewery demonstrates what you can be done when there is a sensitive, committed developer, someone who cares about what he builds, and who sticks around to make sure that it continues to be more than the promises of slick renderings. With this architectural triumph, Narragansett Beer proves it is a great neighbor," writes Will Morgan, GoLocal Architecture Critic.

RI's Homegrown Residential Properties Celebrates 40 Years

CEO Sally Lapides talks about founding the company 40 years ago, "In 1981, Liz Chace and I decided to open an office with a goal of selling houses differently than our competitors. Interest rates were 17.5 % and everyone thought we were nuts to think we could break into a male-dominated field at such a time. Six brave women joined us, however, and RPL was born. We were kind of a disrupter in a space populated by traditional brokerage firms. We marketed differently, we advertised differently, and simply put, we worked really hard."

Gina Raimondo

The former Rhode Island Governor -- and now U.S. Secretary of Commerce -- was rolled out as the point person for Joe Biden's administration to build momentum for the Build Back America legislation.

The Biden administration can't get a consensus amongst Democrats.

Raimondo crisscrossed the country, worked members of Congress, and appeared on all the Sunday talking head shows.

With Tuesday's election results, some moderate Democrats maybe even less likely to support the proposed $1.85 trillion social safety net legislation.

Donald Trump

Virginia Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin stiff-armed Trump and kept him out of the Commonwealth.

Biden won Virginia just a year ago by 10 points

The strategy gave the Republicans a huge win in a blue state and showed the winning strategy for how Republicans can win in a general election.

The-post Trump political landscape is now established.

Old School Tactics Not Dead in Providence, Apparently

Buddy may be gone, but it appears that good old Providence corruption is alive and well.

As GoLocal first reported, a person associated with a Providence nightclub was arrested for reportedly trying to bribe a Board of Licenses official for an entertainment license.

On Wednesday, police were called to City Hall for a report of a bribery of a city clerk.

Shootings, Vicious Crimes, Horrible Assaults

Providence simply does not have a beat on the violence that is plaguing the city -- nearly 40 murders in the past 18 months.

There are those that claim that the statistics show that crime in Providence is not much worse than other cities, blah, blah.

The reality is that this is in fact one of the most murderous times -- and as GoLocal unveiled, even those facing two felony gun charges get the run of the city and can allegedly commit murder.

So Where Did You Get the Money?

Transparency for you but not for me.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Seth Magaziner is calling on the other candidates running for office to be transparent and disclose their five previous years' taxes. But, he is refusing to disclose the source of $800,000 that he lent his own campaign account.

Magaziner made the demand for the release of tax returns on Monday. Magaziner is one of five prominent Democrats running for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2022.

“Rhode Islanders deserve to have trust in their elected officials and we earn that trust by being transparent,” said Magaziner -- in talking about taxes.  “Candidates in Rhode Island should follow the long-accepted custom that President Trump broke when he refused to release his tax returns.  No one should ever have to guess who their elected officials are working for.”
