Allan Fung

Allan Fung: The Republican Gubernatorial candidate is just six points behind in the Channel 12/Providence Journal Poll released this week, and that means he's well within striking distance. Let's not forget, his opponent, Democratic candidate Gina Raimondo, has already spent several million in advertising, whereas Fung has spent significantly less. There's room for Fung to grow and that's a good sign for his gubernatorial prospects.

Bishop Tobin: The leader of the Catholic Church in Rhode Island has come under fire for suggesting that voters write in the names of famous Catholics as protest votes in the upcoming elections. Yes, that's a wasted vote, but the Bishop's uncompromising and consistent defense of the Church's values in a world plagued by moral relativity is refreshing.

Catherine Taylor: The Republican Lieutenant Gubernatorial candidate who also appeals to progressive democrats became the first Republican since 1986 to garner the endorsement of the state's AFL-CIO, the largest public employees union. The question remains to be seen whether that will be enough to catapult her to victory considering she was down double digits in the recent WPRI/Providence Journal poll.

Peter Kilmartin: The state's Attorney General gained the momentum in his bid to beat back a spirited challenge from Republican State Senator Dawson Hodgson this week. First, the WPRI/Providence Journal poll showed Kilartin with a double digit lead, then Kilmartin unveiled an endorsement from the International Brotherhood of Police Officers.

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello: It was a little talked about fact after the Septmeber Primary Elections that the Speaker's endorsed candidates won 11 out of 12 primaries. Going into the November election, there's very little buzz about any spirited Republican challenges. The quiet sound you hear is that of Mattiello, who for his part is unopposed, remaining the state's most powerful politician.

Woman and Infants Hospital: Two doctors from Woman and Infants, Katharine D. Wenstrom, MD, the hospital's director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and Stephan R. Carr, MD, the Director of Women and Infants Prenatal Diagnosis Center, have written an article in a national publication detailing the advancements in fetal treatment over the last several years. Led by doctors like Wenstrom and Carr, Woman and Infants is a leader in fetal treatment.

President Obama

President Barack Obama: President Obama was forced to cancel a trip to Rhode Island today for a "non political" event to discuss the state of the economy in order to focus on the growing threat of an Ebola outbreak here in the United States. The federal government should have been far more proactive in addressing this precarious situation and blame starts at the top.

Representative Robert Craven: Golocalprov.com reported this week that the North Kingstown State Representative was arrested on domestic charges twice in 2001 and 2002 both of which were later expunged from his record. Craven pointed out that the charges against him were dropped, but the revelation of these arrests represents a bad week for Craven's hotly contested reelection campaign.

Racial Profiling: It's sickening, but the data shows that minorities are more likely to be pulled over for traffic violations in two-thirds of Rhode Island communities according to a report yesterday in Golocalprov.com. The state needs to get serious about snuffing out racial profiling.

Providence Police Department: It was a tough week for the Providence Police Department after it was revealed that an officer had a previous criminal record and was named as a suspect in a larceny case just one day after he had graduated from the Police Academy. Remember, this comes just one week after Mayor Angel Taveras penned a Providence Journal OP/Ed bragging about how the police department was in shambles during the Cianci era but is well run now.

Student Debt: It's not easy being a Millenial in Rhode Island. The state ranks the worst in the nation for student debt according to wallethub.com, and also has the highest unemployment rate for people aged 24-34.

PC Men's Basketball: Providence College men's basketball fans must be wondering when there will be a season that starts without drama or bad luck. This week, it was revealed that promising red shirt freshman forward Rodney Bullock tore his ACL and will miss the season.
