Side of the Rhode: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in RI Politics?

Friday, September 19, 2014

Every Friday, Russ Moore breaks down who's rising and who's falling in the world of Rhode Island politics. Check out who made the lists this week.

Hot

Robert Healey: The iconic former Cool Moose gubernatorial candidate, who ran for Lieutenant Governor on a platform of abolishing the office, is back in the game again as The Moderate Party's standard bearer for governor. Healey beat back a challenge from the Republican Party who sought to keep him off the ballot this week.

Catherine Taylor: The former Lincoln Chafee staffer is like Teflon. The RI-GOP is more than willing to overlook Taylor's alliance with the left-wing governor and labor unions are likely to support her to block Cumberland Mayor and education reformer Dan McKee.

K. Joseph Shekarchi: The unopposed Warwick State Representative who chairs the Labor Committee is on a tear as of late. Shekarchi is perhaps Democratic Gubernatorial nominee Gina Raimondo's most enthusiastic supporter and he's been selected to chair the Democratic Coordinated Campaign for all the statewide Democratic candidates.

BIF: Providence's Business Innovation Factory hosted its annual Summit this week at Trinity Rep. The Summit featured speakers who focused on the need for new, innovated approaches to management principles. Let's hope the conference results in actionable solutions that grow our economy.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island: The mentoring organization will present the Big Toast to raise funding for the organization at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. The organization deserves everyone's support given all the good it does in providing direction and love for underprivileged youngsters.

0: The ammount of dollars paid to television in Jorge Elorza's victorious bid for the Democratic nomination in the Providence race for mayor. A terrible harbinger for television, but a good sign for "alternative" media as the landscape becomes more decentralized.

Not

Providence Bachelors: Apparently all the single men in Providence are either smelly, carless, obsessed with sports, ugly, or cheap according to a recent article on golocalprov.com. It's a shame too considering how all the single ladies in our city are so perfect. Right, single guys?

Jorge Elorza: Elorza's opponent, the iconic former Mayor Vincent Buddy Cianci, is out with a robo call pointing out that Elorza wrote a paper questioning the existence of God. This will hurt Elorza with religious voters. But have no fear, Elorza's leadership style dictates that he can just scapegoat an unnamed underling again and claim someone else wrote it.

Hedge Funds: CALPERS, the California public employee retirement pension system, which is one of the largest in the world, has divested from hedge funds, arguing that the returns don't justify the costs. Here's the kicker: CALPERS had about 1 percent of its capital in hedge funds while Rhode Island has about 15 percent.

Homework: Experts are starting to question whether homework does more harm than good given that it instill a sense or boredom and dread in students who should instead be riveted and passionate about learning. I knew I was in the right when I refused to do homework as a kid.

NFL: The National Football League remains in the midst of a public relations nightmare since several high profile players have been implicated in domestic violence. The league has bundled the response by either downplaying the indiscretions or, what's worse, apparently trying to cover one of them up.

John Hope Settlement House: So it appears that the John Hope Settlement House isn't only a problem due to political hiring taking place, but there are also safety concerns. The Department of Children, Youth, and Families has found that several vans being used by the non-profit were not inspected or registered.
