Councilwoman Nirva LaFortune’s campaign announced on Tuesday that she has been endorsed by former Boston Mayor Kim Janey to be the next Mayor of Providence.
“A bold and history-making leader herself, Mayor Janey has led on some of the toughest fights in Boston’s history. She led the effort to re-open Boston safely, increased funding and resources to help people find and access affordable housing, pushed for criminal justice reform, and more.,” said LaFortune’s campaign.
Before stepping into the role of Mayor of Boston after then-Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was named to serve as Secretary of Labor under President Joe Biden, Janey was a Boston City Councilor and President of the Boston City Council.
“She understands the importance of elected officials who know their communities and constituents well. At the age of 11, Mayor Janey was a little girl participating in the desegregation of Boston’s public schools – facing the rocks and racial slurs that characterized Boston’s tumultuous busing program in the 1970s. Forty-five years later, Mayor Janey was sworn in as Boston’s first woman and first Black person to be Mayor,” said the LaFortune’s campaign
“I am proud to support Nirva LaFortune for Mayor of Providence. I know that Councilwoman LaFortune is ready to meet the challenges facing Providence. Nirva has the experience - both professional and lived experience - to hit the ground running on Day One and begin delivering results for the people of Providence. I hope that you will join me on #TeamNirva,” said Janney in the press release.
Janey lost her reelection bid to now-Mayor Michelle Wu in the Democratic primary -- Wu is now the sitting mayor.
Harris Endorses Cuervo
Gonzalo Cuervo’s campaign announced that Councilwoman Mary Kay Harris, representing Ward 11 (South Providence, Elmwood, and the West End), has endorsed him.
Last week, former Providence City Councilman Michael Solomon announced he was supporting Brett Smiley.
