The admission by Governor Dan McKee’s office that federal law enforcement officials are investigating an education contract using federal dollars issued sparked some quick reaction from Democratic rivals.

Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea who is challenging McKee in the Democratic primary Tweeted, “Rhode Islanders deserve better.”

Helena Foulkes, the former corporate CEO and Democratic candidate for governor said in a statement, "“For many Rhode Islanders, this story feels all too familiar—yet another career politician finds himself in the shadow of an FBI investigation. Once again, Dan McKee has shown that he cares more about enriching his well-connected friends than serving the people of our state. How can Rhode Islanders possibly trust him now?”

“The endless cycle of indictments and FBI investigations will continue until we oust the corrupt political machine that has been running our state for decades,” said former RI Secretary of State Matt Brown. “Rhode Islanders are sick of the politicians and corporate CEOs who are running things, always looking out for the interests of the wealthy and well-connected. Last year, as Rhode Islanders struggled to afford their basic needs like housing and healthcare, Governor McKee awarded a multi-million dollar contract to a consulting firm tied to one of his top campaign donors. I hope the FBI will get to the bottom of what happened.”

The RI Republican party's chair Sue Cienki released the following statement, "Governor Dan McKee is simply another corrupt entrenched politician that is more interested in lining the pockets of his close associates than helping struggling Rhode Islanders. We deserve a leader that will address the pocket-book issues affecting hard-working families across our state. We need a leader with a bold vision that will transform our economy, not another corrupt politician.”

McKee Raises $100,000 Plus on Thursday Night

On the brighter side for McKee, his political apparatus had a big night on Thursday. McKee's campaign hosted more than 350 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. McKee's campaign expects to close the quarter at a personal record.
