Rhode Island State Senator Jeanine Calkin has announced she is running for Senate Majority Leader.

First elected to Senate District 30 (Warwick) in 2016, Democrat Calkin served one term, then lost in the 2018 election, before beating fellow Democrat and incumbent Mark McKenney in the 2020 primary and running unopposed in the general election.

Senator Michael McCaffrey is currently the Senate Majority Leader. Senator Gayle Goldin has declared her intent to run for Senate President, to replace Domenick Ruggerio.

Calkin on the Record

Calkin released the following statement:

"The Rhode Island Senate needs reform.  That is why I have decided to run for Senate Majority Leader.

Senate rules make it difficult for Senators to pass the legislation they work very hard on, and prohibit open and fair processes.  If elected, I will work to improve these rules to ensure that all Senators are given the opportunity to pass meaningful legislation that helps the people of Rhode Island.

We need new leadership that aligns with the values of the people of our state.  These include implementing a Green New Deal, instituting a fair and living wage, protecting women’s rights, strengthening unions and ensuring health care for all.

Running for majority leader is not something I take lightly.  If elected, I will do everything I can to improve the legislative processes within the Senate.  I hope my colleagues will join me as we strive to help all who live and work here in Rhode Island."
