RI Political Cooperative, a progressive group of candidates in Rhode Island became the second political group to call for the ouster of Senate President Dominick Ruggerio.

On Wednesday, the leading Latino political organization in Rhode Island called for replacing Senate President Dominick Ruggerio.

The chairman of the RI Latino Political Action Committee -- Joseph Molina Flynn -- announced the group is supporting Senator Gayle Goldin (D-District 3) in her potential bid to be Senate President.

"As part of RILPAC’s commitment to supporting more representative, leadership in the General Assembly, Senator Goldin’s work and leadership around pay equity and family protection have been pivotal to our state. We believe that her leadership as Senate President will bring about additional opportunities and access for others to be part of leadership positions that they deserve," Molina Flynn said in a statement.

Now, the RI Political Cooperative is making a call for change. It issued the following statement:

For decades corrupt, conservative leadership has controlled our General Assembly and they have failed at every turn to represent the interests of the people of Rhode Island – this session that will change. The Rhode Island Political Cooperative is proud to support Senator Gayle Goldin in her bid for Senate President. It was not long ago that serious challenges to leadership in the General Assembly felt impossible but following on the Co-op’s eight primary wins there is now real opportunity for change in the leadership of the General Assembly.

New leadership is essential to pass a Green New Deal, single-payer healthcare, a $15 minimum wage, and much more. Senator Goldin is bravely challenging the powerful establishment that has controlled our state for decades. The Co-op and the Co-op’s future Senators will be fully backing her in this fight.

“It’s been decades since we’ve had a Rhode Island Senate that fights for the interests of the people of Rhode Island but I believe with Gayle as Senate President we can build it,” said RI Political Cooperative Co-Chair and Senator-elect Jeanine Calkin. “Gayle has the experience and integrity that it takes to lead and Co-op Senators will be proudly supporting her. We ask our future colleagues to do so as well.”

Rhode Islanders made it clear on September 8th that they were ready for change. This year we can end the long era of corrupt leadership in our State Senate. We ask all supporters of the Co-op to call their Senator and ask them to vote for Senator Gayle Goldin for Senate President.

Ruggerio Defends his Record

Greg Pare, spokesperson for Ruggerio said in a statement to GoLocal, "Improving the socio-economic status of all Rhode Islanders, particularly those impacted by systemic racism and injustice, has always been at the forefront of the Senate’s agenda. Senate President Ruggerio has been proud to work with the Black & Latino Caucus to address policies that assist communities they represent."

"Under his leadership, the Senate has fought to codify the Affordable Care Act; enact DACA protections to assist Dreamers; raise the minimum wage; prohibit housing discrimination; overhaul the state’s criminal justice system and reform the state’s discriminatory occupational licensing statutes; enhance worker protections such as barring non-compete agreements for low-wage workers and setting minimum safety standards at nursing homes; and, of course, we have passed a strong Equal Pay Act and Paid Family Leave. President Ruggerio is looking forward to fighting for a bold agenda with a united Senate in 2021," Pare said.

Goldin is an East Side Senator and considered liberal. Ruggerio, in contrast, comes out of the labor movement and has a long track record of being pragmatic and pro-development.
