According to the report in CNBC, “the yearly cost of attendance at over a dozen colleges is now six figures, after factoring in tuition, fees, room and board, books, transportation and other expenses.”

“For the 2026-27 academic year, 16 institutions — including Duke, Georgetown, New York University and University of Chicago — have a sticker price of more than $100,000, according to data exclusively provided to CNBC from The Princeton Review’s upcoming “The Best 392 Colleges” list. Others, such as Brown University, Northwestern and Pepperdine, cost more than $99,000,” said CNBC.

According to Jeff Selingo, the author of “Dream School” — “We just keep going up and it just never stops.”

For Brown, the cost is $99,994 a year.

Brown's Financial Situation, Higher Salaries for Execs, Layoffs, and $800 Million in Borrowing

Brown's financial situation is a mass of conflicting data.

As GoLocal reported in July of 2025, the University took the unprecedented step of $800 million.

While Brown University is slashing staffing, selling assets, and borrowing hundreds of millions, top executives are seeing their compensation packages grow.

Two Brown executives are now paid more than $3 million a year in compensation at the not-for-profit Ivy League school.

Brown’s Jane Dietz, the Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, received a total compensation package of $3,230,378 — a 12% increase from the previous reported year.

Paxson’s Compensation Jumps 73%

The other $3 million executive at Brown, President Christine Paxson, has seen her pay package rocket upwards — a one-year increase of 73%.

Paxson jumped from $1,831,198 to $3,177,590, according to the recently released 990 IRS filings just released by the IRS.

It was announced in May that Paxson had her contract extended, but the salary increase was not made public.

It should be noted that these raises were awarded as the University was coming under fire for antisemitism.

The cutting and borrowing have taken place in the past few months.
