The guardian of a student at Hope High School in Providence was reportedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials outside the school last week, according to the head of a volunteer organization.
Over the weekend, Lucia Gill Case with “Hope Circle” shared via email that the student’s living situation was uncertain following the incident.
According to its website, Hope Circle is an “incredible group of volunteers supporting the students and teachers of Hope High School.” The organization pairs community members with classroom and tutoring opportunities.
“I’m very troubled to report that ICE lurked around on Olney Street last week as students and families were making their way to school in the morning, and detained the guardian of one of our students,” wrote Case in an email to the “caring folks of Hope Circle" over the weekend.
“I have no information on this person’s legal status or whether any due process of law was followed in the case," wrote Case.

Case provided the following details on the situation in the email:
What I do know is that our student was left without a home to return to, and that school staff had to scramble to find him a suitable living situation for the unknowable, possibly boundless time during which the person who provided him a home in this country will be detained or deported.
Some school staff are getting together to learn from folks at Deportation Defense Network about best strategies to inform students and families about their rights, and to fight back against potentially unlawful and anonymous ICE actions in our neighborhood.
If you are passionate about these issues and/or would simply like to learn more, I invite you to join the discussion about what we can do. Let's stand up for immigrants’ rights—and for the preservation of due process for all residents of the United States.
The Deportation Defense Network did not respond to request for comment at time of publication.
