A suspect has been arrested in the shooting of three Palestinian college students in Burlington, Vermont.

Jason J. Eaton, 48, was arrested Sunday, the Burlington Police Department said in a news release. Police said Eaton lives in an apartment building in front of the shooting scene, and a search of his home uncovered evidence that gave investigators “probable cause to believe that Mr. Eaton perpetrated the shooting.”

Vermont Digger reported that three Palestinian American students were shot on Saturday in Burlington, Vermont. All three of the victims are 20-year-old men and were reportedly confronted by a white male with a handgun, according to the Burlington Police Department.

Though authorities did not immediately identify a motive, national advocacy groups — and the victims’ family members — have called it a hate crime.

According to Vermont Digger, “Family members identified them as Tahseen Ali Ahmad, Kinnan Abdalhamid, and Hisham Awartani [who attends Brown University].

“The shooting took place shortly before 6:30 p.m. on North Prospect Street. Without saying a word, the shooter fired at least four rounds from a pistol, striking two of the men in the torso and one in the lower extremities, police said in a press release issued early Sunday afternoon. Two of the victims were in stable condition and one sustained serious injuries,” said the publication.

The suspect fled by foot, police said, and was not immediately apprehended.
