VIDEO: MA Teacher Caught Planting 9mm Bullet on High School Staircase

A Southbridge High School teacher was caught on camera planting live ammunition on a staircase in the school.

Alfred Purcell, 57, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of ammunition, two counts of carrying ammunition on school grounds, disturbing a school assembly, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace.

The Incident

According to Southbridge Police, on Thursday, May 16, at approximately 8:12 a.m. Purcell reported to staff that he had just found one live round of 9mm ammunition in the rear stairwell.

As a result, the school was placed the school on lockdown as a precautionary measure pending further investigation.

During the lockdown, staff from the high school and the school resource officer reviewed video camera footage that was available in order to determine who was responsible.

Several police officers were also sent to the high school to assist.

An investigation ensued during which time officer’s and staff from the high school were able to review the video and determined that Purcell was seen standing in the stairwell and removing the live round of ammunition from his pocket.

Purcell was seen dropping the live round of ammunition on the floor of the stairwell and quickly left the area. He returned approximately 10 minutes later and stood over the live round of ammunition and then appeared to take a picture of it with his cellular telephone.

Purcell then used his school-issued portable radio to request assistance in the stairwell from the school administration and our school resource officer.

Upon responding to the stairwell and having conversation with Purcell about his alleged discovery, the school was placed into lockdown, Purcell returned to his class with his students during the lockdown which lasted approximately 1 hour, according to police.

Based on this evidence, Purcell was arrested on scene.
