Providence School Closed Due to Police Standoff in South Providence

Providence Police on site on Norwich Avenue

Providence Police have a standoff outside a home on Norwich Avenue in the South Providence neighborhood.

As a result, City of Providence officials have closed one nearby Providence school.

“Due to an ongoing active public safety situation, school will be canceled at Robert L. Bailey Elementary School (65 Gordan Avenue) for Tuesday, March 19. All after-school activities at this school will also be canceled. All other Providence Public Schools are open,” said Emily Crowell, Director of Communications.

The police standoff was first reported by WPRI-12 and began at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

A Providence Police official tells GoLocal that the Department believes there is an armed man in the home with "innocents."
