60% of East Greenwich Firefighters Have Coronavirus - Firehouse Shuttered

The East Greenwich firefighters union announced Wednesday that a firehouse has been shuttered due to COVID-19.

“1 of 2 of our firehouses have been temporarily shuttered overnight as 21 of our 34 (60%) firefighters have now tested positive for COVID. Most are experiencing mild symptoms and a couple are experiencing rather moderate symptoms,” they said.

“Mutual aid from our neighboring communities is in place as a temporary and immediate response plan as we work through these unprecedented times while our members recover and remain in quarantine,” the continued.

There are few businesses, schools or state agencies not be impacted by the coronavirus. 

Lt. Colonel Kevin Barry confirms that the Rhode Island State Police now have ten troopers infected with the virus and another ten are in quarantine.

The State Police has a staff of 240.

Providence Police have been hit hard with more than 60 cases since March.
