New England native Rebecca Couto da Silva has been living and studying in Bolzano, Italy.

Rebecca Couto da Silva appeared on GoLocal LIVE from Bolzano, Italy, where she talked about coronavirus cases surging back up — and how the country is responding.

“I think everyone was a bit shocked by it doubling between a couple of days,” said da Silva. "That’s exponential growth, so obviously something was not working and/or we’re doing better with testing.

On Monday, CNBC reported “Italy, the epicenter of Europe’s first coronavirus outbreak, moves to stop second surge.”

“So we are testing travelers in airports coming back from certain places and we are testing anyone who goes to the hospital for any reason,” said da Silva. ‘So you are scooping in a lot of people here in Italy, where I’m sure that other countries are.”

New Restrictions

“The state of emergency will go through January — it never stopped, it just kept getting extended,” she said. “So now it’s very strict — if you’re inside, the mask is on, and if you’re outside and in a place where you’re likely to run into someone, a piazza or city street, then you put the mask on.”

“I believe they put in a curfew, which I believe means close restaurants at midnight — so they’re doing things to try and avoid another full on lockdown.”
