Rebecca Couto de Silva appeared on GoLocal LIVE from Bolzano, Italy, where she talked about her middle school daughter being back in school — and how students and families are feeling.

“Our numbers are going up — our testing is also up — the reproduction rate is something that is concerning to people but people are really calm about things,” said da Silva.

The tourists are leaving Italy. Now catastrophe looms,” reported CNN over the weekend.

But for da Silva, and families with students, the focus is primarily on school.

“She just moved into middle school — they had a lot of prep, a lot of sanitation prep, mask press and all of that, but she’s really enjoying it,” said da Silva. “We’ve already had one student test positive, I think it was in the pre-K group. So then that student and that student’s family is quarantined -- and then all the other students, I’m not sure if they’re quarantined or in isolation.”

“Quarantine is this very strict, ‘you can’t go out, it’s a crime to go out,’” said da Silva of how it is handled by Italian government. “Isolation is you’ve been exposed and we’re going to test you and you shouldn’t go out in that time. But I’m not sure that going out would be as serious as going out when you’re actually under the medically supervised quarantine.”

Overall, da Silva said her daughter is happy to be back at school.

“She said oh it feels normal, you know, it feels good — like she just feels right and she’s really excited about middle school and I think just being back and being there was just so great,” she said.
