New England native Rebecca Couto da Silva, on life in Italy during coronavirus.

Rebecca Couto da Silva appeared on GoLocal LIVE from Bolzano, Italy, after the European Union agreed to a set of recommendations that will now allow some travelers from outside countries to visit — but not the United States currently.

“So you can give a recommendation and then the individual counties set the rules — so the individual countries will be most likely to follow the EU recommendation but they don’t have to,” said da Silva. “There have countries that have said yes we’re going to let in Americans…who knows if that will change."

“The thing is you’ve got Americans on TV refusing to wear masks — one of the things here, if there’s a rule, it’s a pretty big deal if you don’t follow it. I don’t think most Americans were necessarily subject to this sort of military-style — this was actually military enforcement --- that we had of our lockdown,” she said.

“There is much more freedom now, but if you have to wear a mask, you have to wear a mask and hopefully people going to another country would respect that, but it’s one of those things, we see the numbers too,” said da Silva. “We know what happened to us when our numbers were looking like that here in Italy and so there is a balancing calculation being done.”

“People aren’t necessarily like hey yeah, bring your COVID-19 over after not wearing a mask in your own country.”
