As Rhode Island Restrictions Loosen, State Faces Among Highest Coronavirus Numbers in U.S.

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo’s pause has ended after three weeks. She announced Friday that the three-week partial closure was successful as it prevented the state's hospitals from being overwhelmed. However, hospitalizations jumped 12 percent during the pause.
As of today, Raimondo is not only ending the pause, but is also beginning to lift other restrictions meant to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Near Record Deaths
Rhode Island’s deaths continue to increase at a record pace. The last day reported by the RI Department of Health was last Thursday, and 23 Rhode Islanders had died — the second-highest number of deaths in the state since the outbreak of the pandemic.
On April 30 and May 2, RI recorded 24 deaths each of those days.
RI Has 6th Highest Per Capita Deaths in U.S.
Rhode Island ranks 6th in the U.S. for deaths per capita and has been moving quickly towards overtaking Connecticut for 5th. Rhode Island passed Louisiana in November.
RI is on pace to have approximately 400 deaths in December alone.
RI 3rd in U.S. for Coronavirus Cases Per Capita
Just 12 days ago, Rhode Island led the world with the highest number of cases per capita — topping Indiana, Serbia and the country Georgia.
RI has been surpassed by two states -- it is now trailing Tennessee and California in the United States according to Covid ActNow for the most cases per capita.
1st in Testing
Raimondo continues to press on testing. RI has conducted the most tests per capita in the United States, But, there is no correlation between testing and limiting cases or deaths. RI and Alaska are ranked #1 and #2 for testing per capita and both states have been among the states with the most cases per capita.
