The 19-year-old Cruz is of Italian and Hawaiian descent. She has an older sister Kalana, younger brother Kanoa. Cruz graduated from The Met School (Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center) in Providence because of her interest in the Big Picture Learning Opportunities they offered. Her curriculum at The Met School included live presentations in front of classmates, school advisory and staff and, it was there, she began to feel comfortable with public speaking.

She currently studies sociology at Community College of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College and, in fact, began her first year of college the day after the pageant. In addition to her work schedule, appearance activities and extensive training for Miss Teen USA, Cruz will continue this fall as a full time student with plans to continue to law school after graduation. That of course, pending the outcome of the national Miss Teen USA competition next week. Should she win the coveted title of Miss Teen USA, her schedule will be adjusted to include the new responsibilities and exciting opportunities that come with being Miss Teen USA. To bring the Miss Teen USA crown home to Rhode Island or not, this past year has opened many doors for Cruz and has given her tremendous life experiences, professional contacts and, beautiful lasting friendships. She's worked hard to get herself ready and has an incredible team of directors, pageant staff, trainers and supporters behind her. All who have been instrumental in helping her prepare for the national competition next week.

"Our philosophy for the Miss Rhode Island USA & Miss Rhode Island Teen USA program is not about encouraging young women to "win" a pageant, but to encourage young women to develop life skills that will ultimately help them win in life by being their personal best in everything they do. says Cindy Provost, Co-Director of Miss Rhode Island Teen USA

Miss Teen USA has recently been in the news announcing that the competition will no longer feature a swimsuit event for teens. The high-profile beauty pageant will switch the bathing suit competition to an athletic wear competition, where participants will walk the catwalk in active-wear.

"This decision reflects an important cultural shift we're all celebrating that empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourage those in their communities to do the same," says Miss Universe president Paula Shugart in a letter to state directors, according to CNN. "Our hope is that this decision will help all of Miss Teen USA's fans recognize these young women for the strong, inspiring individuals they are." Miss Teen USA is owned and operated by The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) uses its global grassroots reach to empower women to be self-confident and strive to be their personal best. MUO believes that every woman should be “Confidently Beautiful.” The MISS UNIVERSE®, MISS USA®, and MISS TEEN USA® beauty pageants provide an international platform through dedicated partnerships with charities, sponsors, and brands around the world.
