It's time to chalk up yet another accolade for Cranston-native and 2012 Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo. In addition to holding a key to the city of Cranston, the beauty pageant champion now has her very own honorary street.

On Monday, the Cranston City Council approved a resolution creating “Olivia Culpo Way” on Albert Avenue, where the Culpo family resides. The honor is commemorative and the official name of the street will remain unchanged.

Why Olivia?

“The mayor wanted to honor and recognize the tremendous accomplishment that Culpo has earned,” said Carlos Lopez Estrada, Chief of Staff for Cranston Mayor Allan Fung. “It’s not every day that someone from Cranston is recognized for her talent and the mayor thought it was appropriate to honor her for that.”

Aside from explaining the inspiration behind the measure, Estrada also addressed local residents’ concerns that Albert Ave would be renamed. “This is just an honorary title,” said Estrada. “There will be no postal changes or changes to emergency, police of fire response systems.”

Culpo won both the 2012 Miss USA and 2012 Miss Universe pageants last year. Culpo was the first Miss Universe winner from the US since 1997 and the first ever winner to hail from Rhode Island.
