Rhode Island’s Olivia Culpo Crowned Miss USA

Olivia Culpo has made RI history as she becomes the first Miss RI to be crowned Miss USA.

The 19-year old Boston University student hails from Cranston and is a graduate of St. Mary Academy-Bay View.

Culpo is the daughter of Peter and Susan Culpo of Cranston and a high-honors graduate of St. Mary Academy-Bay View's class of 2010.  In high school, Olivia's love for Italian language gave her the opportunity to take part in two foreign language programs to Milano, Italy. She continues her education as a sophomore at Boston University and has been placed on the Dean's List every semester.

Olivia was raised in musically rich surroundings, with her parents both having begun their professional lives as musicians. She began studying cello in the second grade and has participated in the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, RI Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble, Bay View Orchestra and Rhode Island All-State Orchestra as well as studying voice, As a cellist, Olivia won a seat in the Boston Symphony Hall in Boston, Carnegie Hall in New York City and a tour of England in 2010. Ms Culpo was accepted into an intensive summer music program at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina for two summers. She continues to perform with the Boston University Accompanietta.

Rhode Island's Shanna Moakler was crowned Miss USA in 1995, but she competed as Miss New York.
