URI Basketball’s Revolving Door: Transfers In & Out and Decommits Are Hitting the Program
Saturday, April 04, 2020
The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team in early February looked to have locked an NCAA bid and the future was bright.
Now, just weeks later, the program is in constant transition — players coming in and out like a spinning revolving door.
Less than a week after committing to the Rams, Brooklyn forward Abou Ousmane has recommitted. The 6’9” power forward made the decision this week.

Sophomore guard Tyrese Martin announced that he will be entering the transfer portal after two seasons.
“To the University of Rhode Island, I want to thank all of the Rhody fans for all the love and support. I also want to thank the coaching staff for treating me like one of their own and believing in me. But after multiple long conversations with the people in my corner, I have decided to transfer from the school,” said Martin in a statement on Twitter.
Martin is the 10th player over the last two seasons to leave the URI basketball program.
He is the fourth player that URI has lost to transfer just this season.
Earlier in March, forward Mekhi Long announced that he was leaving the program after just one season.
Transferring In
Former University of Maryland players Makhi and Makhel Mitchell announced that they are coming to Rhode Island. The twins picked URI over other reported suitors including Georgetown University and Providence College.
And, former URI star Hassan Martin's younger brother Malik announced that he was transferring from the University of Charlotte. The younger Martin averaged 9.2 ppg.
Moving forward, URI Coach David Cox has two vacant roster spots.
