RI Men’s Lacrosse: PC Beats Marquette, Brown Ends Losing Streak, Bryant Falls to UVM

It was a split decision this weekend for the Division I men’s lacrosse programs in Rhode Island.

The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Marquette, 13-10, on Saturday, April 13 in Milwaukee.

It was a big win for the Friar’s program.

The Friars improved to 6-6 overall, including a 2-1 in the Big East. The Golden Eagles dropped to 4-8 (0-3 BIG EAST). Ryan Bell paced the Friars' offense with eight points on three goals and five assists.

1st Quarter: 

- The Friars outscored Marquette, 5-3, in the first quarter.

- The teams exchanged a pair of goals to start the quarter. Michael Chabra (Reading, Mass.) and Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, Md.) were responsible for the Friars' goals.

- Horrigan scored his second goal of the game off a feed from Ryan Bell (Smithtown, N.Y.).

- Marquette answered with a goal less than a minute later.

- Providence scored two goals to close the quarter. Luke Jaber (Milton, Mass.) and Frankie Carroll (East Setauket, N.Y.) each scored.

- Providence led 7-4 in shots on goal after the first quarter.

2nd Quarter: 

- Providence used a 5-0 run to take the 9-6 lead heading into halftime.

- The Friars went on a 3-0 run to extend their scoring streak to 5-0. Bell, Rhett Chambers (Longmeadow, N.Y.) and Chabra scored the goals.

- The Golden Eagles closed out the second quarter on a 3-1 run. Chabra scored the goal for Providence.

- James Corasaniti (New York, N.Y.) made four saves in the second quarter.

3rd Quarter: 

- Providence claimed an 11-7 lead through the first three-quarters of play.

- Marquette opened the quarter with a goal before Horrigan answered at the 11:47 mark of the quarter.

- Patrick McAleavey (Trumbull, Conn.) scored for the Friars with a minute remaining in the quarter off a feed from Bell.

- Providence led in shots (13-6), shots on goal (10-5) and ground balls (9-5) in the third quarter

4th Quarter   

- Providence held onto its lead to claim the 13-10 win.

- The Golden Eagles scored consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter to make it 11-9.

- Bell scored two goals in the final six minutes to give the Friars a comfortable lead to close out the game.

Notes:    

- Bell had a team-high seven points on two goals and five assists. His five-assist put him at 113 career assists and 160 career points. He is the current all-time assist leader for Providence College and is fourth in career points.

- Bell has recorded 39 assists this season, which is three shy of the single season record set by Kyle Ojakian in 2002. Ojakian set the single-season mark with 42 assists.

- Bell has scored five-or-more points in seven games this season, including four games with seven or more. Additionally, he has had consecutive games of at least seven points. He recorded eight in last week's victory over Villanova.

- Chabra and Horrigan each had three goals. 

- Chabra has scored a hattrick in two of the Friars' three BIG EAST games for a total of seven goals.

- Horrigan recorded his third hattrick of the season and first in BIG EAST play.

- Corasaniti finished the game with 11 saves.

- The Friars led in shots (37-33) and shots on goal (25-21)

Next: The Friars host Denver for Senior Day on Saturday, April 20. The faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m.

 

Bryant Falls

The Bryant University Men's Lacrosse team lost to the University of Vermont on Saturday at home by a final score of 16-12. Kevin Groeninger had a hat trick for Bryant, and Nathan LaLiberte scored two faceoff goals in the contest. Charlie Pope and Max Frattaroli each had hat tricks for UVM.

Bryant drops to 7-4, 3-2 in the American East conference.  Vermont is 5-7, 3-2

UVM outscored Bryant 8-2 in the second quarter and took a 10-6 lead into the half.

How it Happened

The scoring got underway at Beirne Stadium after UVM's Griffin Fenech found the back of the net just over 30 seconds into the game.
The Bulldogs would strike back after Kevin Groeninger connected on two consecutive goals to give Bryant their first lead of the day.

Dawson Reilly would then get into the scoring column and extend Bryant's lead to three.

After a score by Vermont's Tristan Whitaker, Jack Lonsinger would find John Tomsheck who would go over the top and give Bryant a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter would open with a bang a Nathan LaLiberte would run the opening faceoff back and score his second goal of the season.

UVM would then go on an 8-1 run to close out the first half. Mason Drouin scored Bryant's lone goal during that stretch.

Vermont carried its offensive production into the third quarter, opening with three straight goals (Whitaker, Frattaroli, Zhao). 

Aidan Goltz would eventually break the Catamounts scoring streak after scoring an unassisted goal with 44 seconds to go in the quarter.

Johnny Hackett would start the fourth quarter off strong for Bryant as he would net an unassisted score with 14:22 to go. 

Charlie Pope would score back-to-back times for Vermont including a man-up goal where he was assisted by Brock Haley.

Hackett would find the net once again after being assisted by Kevin Groeninger.

Hackett would then assist Aidan Goltz who would record a man-up goal with just under seven to play.

On the following draw, Nathan LaLiberte would proceed to score another faceoff goal and cut the Bryant deficit to four.

Down a man with 2:14 to play, Aidan Goltz would late Groeninger for his third goal of the game.

UVM outshot Bryant 54-42
Bryant would convert on 18-20 clear opportunities
Vermont won the ground ball margin 35-33
The Bulldogs went 14-31 at the X. Nathan LaLiberte had the majority of draws going 14-28.

 

Game Notes

Kevin Groeninger led Bryant in goals with 3. He also tallied an assist on Saturday.
Nathan LaLiberte led the Bulldogs in ground balls with 8.
Scott Einarson recorded 15 saves in net on 31 shots.
Today's loss marked the first time either opponent had lost a game against one another at home.
Bryant's longest win streak of the season is snapped at three games.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will venture to Vestal, New York, next Saturday, where they will take on the Binghamton Bearcats. The faceoff is set for 12:00 pm. 

 

Brown Gets First Ivy Win

Brown ended a three-game losing streak and got its second win of the season, 13-12, over Princeton at home.

The Bears are now 2-9 on the season and 1-3 in the Ivy League. Princeton falls to 7-4 and 2-2 in the league.

Brown led 7-2 in the first half and then had to fight off a Tiger victory.
